MG MGA - Spare wheel cover
I was bequeathed an industrial sewing machine some time ago and I thought I'd try my hand at making a spare wheel cover. Has anyone found a supplier for the original hardura felt used to manufacture these covers? Woolies sell a similar felt but it has a uniformly grey vinyl coating whereas the original was black with very closely spaced grey spots. Any suggestions? Thanks Mike |

On my 1600's I thought that the spare wheel cover was plain grey. The material available in OZ was called Plastofelt and the original material had a jute-felt backing (rather similar to the old-style carpet underfelt but thinner) but in recent times it has a flock-type backing. In both cases the outside looked like (and probably was) vynil. Black was always fairly readily available but the grey not so. MGA and MGB tool bags were made of similar (black) material. |

Mike, I also have an original one in grey, I didn't know they made black ones. I will need a new one for my restoration so am interested to see how you get on. Neil |

Have you tried Martrim in Sandbach. 01270 767771. I don't know if they have any but worth a try. And, by the way, Mike isn't asking where to get a cover, he is asking where to get the material. |

Yes I'm sorry I was a bit misleading in the shade. In actual fact the original hardura (I'm positive my tatty cover is original) from a distance looks grey but on closer inspection it is black with a matrix of grey spots (see photo if I can upload it). Barry,Gordon,Jim: Is this anything like the material on your covers? If it is I might be tempted into buying one. Thanks for the contact Malcolm I'll give them a ring tomorrow. mike ![]() |

I got a cover from Scarborough Faire several years ago, and it is a uniform grey with a pebbled texture like the second picture you posted. |
