MG MGA - Spare wheel hold down

Does anyone have a picture or diagram of the spare wheel hold down bracket that attachs to the two bolts on the rear bulkhead inside the boot/trunk. Better still does anyone know where I can buy one.

Many thanks,

Andy, I believe there is one for sale on e-bay under MGA

Hi Andy,

I thought that the spare tire hold down clamp for the coupe is the same as for the roadster.
My Service Parts List only shows the one item. It does not have two holes, only one hole for the wing nut.
Moss has them as Part # 453-000 for $69.95

There is one on Ebay Item # 170290360651 for $79.00

Image from the SPL attached. Item 52.

Andy,

Also a photo attached.

Hi Andy,

On re-reading your post several times, I now believe that you are after the bracket that locates the horizontal pin at the bottom of the wing nut.
Sorry, I can't help you with that. You will probably have to make one, or get one from a parted car.

Hi Andy is this what you mean

Andy, if you are looking at the wedge bracket that GC Pugh is showing, I may have one out in my spares. I will not be able to get to it for about a week though to confirm. I would be willing to part with this for a fair price. Contact me at c-schaefer at sbcglobal dot net

For the others, this is a part that is unique to the 1600 coupe. As you can see in the photo above, the spare sits totally in the boot, not intruding past the bulkhead. This leaves more storage space in the interior behind the seats. A very usefull thing.

Andy,
If you are talking about the part that attaches to the rear bulkhead, I had to modify mine as the newer tires were a bit to wide to fit under the bracket. I had to extend it up about 1/2". It would not be difficult to fabricate one. Do you want a drawing with dimensions? Have a good day!

Hi guys and thanks for your responses. GC Pugh showed the bracket that I need which is attached to the rear bulkhead and not the tire hold down bracket. I'll contact C Schaaefer off line and see if he can find one for me.

Happy New Year,

As I have little knowledge of the coupe body fittings I was, and others, confusing the tire clamp with the forward tire hold down wedge only on the coupe.
I have repeated G C Pugh's photo with an arrow pointing to the wedge.
But one question. Where does it appear in the Service Parts List? Does it have a BMC Part Number?

Hi Andy glad it was of use, it also appears to be adjustable the holes in the bracket are slots to allow for different thickness tyres

Hi Mick I think it was only the 1600 cars that had this clamp and you would need the 1600 parts manual, I only have a 1500 one and that does not show it at all

Hi Andy,

There is a MGA owner in Washington State that has the tooling and makes those brackets.
I will send his details by email.

Gordon,

I found it in the 1600 Service Parts List. Item 33 in the attached image. (In a separate box).

Mick,
Have you noticed that the bonnet latch (hook) shown in the other box is facing the wrong way - it should point forward, ie, push from front to release it. This is one of very few errors in the parts book. Discovered this when rebuilding my '56 roadster approx 20 years ago.
Peter.

Peter,

Is the image now better?

Andy, I may have a template hanging in the garage if you still need one.

These parts are unique to 1600 and 1600 Mk 2 coupe. It is a good idea to make sure the holes that hold them on are slotted sufficiently to allow you to move the bracket upward more than stock should you have wider tires on the car.

The bracket doesn't show very much when everything is in place.

It is also hard to find the original style wheel cover - which is why I still use my original but ratty one.

Any chance of copying the template on to an email, I am converting my coupe to 1600 spec (mostly race car) so I need to close out the rear firewall. Any help would be much appreciated.
Best regards

Mick,
Good try! But the orientation to the latch fixed to the body brace is still wrong.
LOL, Peter.

Just found mine from my coupe I broke many years ago, if anyone needs one let me know.
