MG MGA - Spring!

To heck with the calendar. I declared Saturday to be the fist day of spring. Birds chirping, bees buzzing and a top down drive for the first time this year! 55 F and sunny is nice weather 'round these parts. Drove to work today with the top down. A bit nippy (25 F) but what a smile!

I went out this weekend also, 2nd time this year now that the salt has been washed away. It also got me to thinking about how many MGA's or anything else old and British (refering to cars no wives) that you see on the road during your daily drives. Except when going to shows or meetings I rarely ever see another on the road.

Come over to Preston and see mine every day! Used it the whole winter (except when unservicable) without the hood (not fitted), got wet a few times, froze plenty of times, suffered no colds, just b******d my shoulder, probably due to damp, cold and heavy steering. Never saw another car with its hood down at 0830 on the way to work, nor 1730 on the way back.

Had the car out yesterday (Sunday). Lovely spring day. But all I did was wash off the salt, and then wax.

In Quebec we have a "Snow Tire Law". No Quebec licensed car without 4 snow tires is allowed to drive on Quebec roads between Nov 15 and Mar 15. If you get caught it is a $300.00 fine and if you have an accident without snow tires your insurance is cancelled. This is suppossidly to stop the number of accidents but in fact the number of accidents rose this year(in the first month).

To bad because some times we do not get any snow unti january and I could be driving my MGA up until then. BUT I CAME OUT YESTERDAY. Great feeling.

Here in southern Ontario I have been able to drive my car for the last few weeks as we haven't had any snow or salt since the last good rain storm a few weeks ago. I have to admit though I still have the top up.

I knew there was a snow tire law in Quebec but didn't realize all the details. There have been many times I clear my head on New Years day with a last drive for the season assuming the roads are clean of course.

Two years ago I was able to drive right up until Jauary 7. Remeber I own an MGA Coupe (heater,roll-up windows,weather protection). The new laws cuts off possibly a month and one half of driving time.

Gordon, is the exemption for vehicles for which winter tires (as opposed to snow tires) are not made?

spring over here in the uk also, 1st warm and dry spell of the year. it also reached 17 degrees C on tuesday, great mga weather. i decided to take the 8 mile journey to bob wests, hood down, big grin, you know the feeling! it took me over an hour each way!
no, it wasnt the traffic, it was the 60 mile high speed detour on open country roads that caused the problem! brilliant.
on the subject of springs, i must have pushed mine a little too far on the drive as i broke the front left anti-roll bar link rod on the way home. great drive though and easily fixed.

Yes - mine came out on Tuesday too. Main car was in the garage for a service - so had to do a business visit in the A - suit and tie - sunglasses on - top down - great stuff. Nice today too but spent the day tidying the garden ( wife's orders!)but good weather set to last the week.

No exception for Quebec regi but outside the province you can come to Quebec without snow tires. Quebec tires must have the snow flake decal on them. I remember when I took my car off the road in 1969 to do the resto ....it had studded snow tires on wire wheels.

The worst part about this law is the insurance companies will void your insurance if you have an accident,in the winter and do not have snow tires.

When the rush hit, to get the tires, you had better believe that the prices rose. Four 265/65/16 Goodyear at $1250 + 15% tax. I bought mine ( Goodyear Ice) from Tire Rack at $112.00 @ US ...shipped to Champlain New York...and installed for just over $600.00 all included.

Most Quebecers believe this law was enacted just so the govt could make 15% tax on each tire.
