MG MGA - Steering rack oil

Does anyone know the volume of oil required in an empty steering rack? I found just one thread in the archives which suggested about a half pint (given as 10 oz.). I've not seen it mentioned at all in the W.Manual. ..........Mike

The WSM Section J.8 says "approximately 1/2 pint (.28 litre) of Hypoid oil to Ref. B (page P.2)"

The tool kit had what looked like a small hand held grease gun. It was actually for topping off the rack with Hypoid oil and worked well for that purpose. Gordon probably has a few laying about...

I always found it almost impossible to top up the rack without removing the radiator - am I alone in this?

Several years ago, inspired by the lube system on my then MGPA 4-Seater I converted my steering rack to a lube system. I adapted the nipples by drilling them out and soldering in brass tubing. Then a bit of plastic tubing and, hey presto, when ever I am under the bonnet I just squirt a bit of oil down the tubing. The rack then self lubricates as I drive.

I had the same problem of not being able to get the oil gun to those grease nipples. So I simply replaced them with two 45 degree grease nipples at exactly the right rotational positions and can just get the gun to line up perfectly between the dynamo pulley and radiator and underneath the fan.
Somewhere I recall seeing an empty MGB rack requiring 1/3rd pint (Imperial)of oil to fill it. I guess the "A" can't be that different.

I actually bought one of those small Tecalemit grease guns which I thought would come in handy when filling the rack. But they are very small (see pic. & sorry I couldn't keep George out of it!) and only hold 20 cc of oil plus they don't dispense very much with each plunge.

So in the end my solution was similar to Steve's in that I cut a length off a 5/16" bolt, drilled a hole down the centre and replaced the lower grease nipple with it to siphon the oil in albeit quite slowly (see pic. at front). However, I couldn't get the full half pint in and estimated 250 cc to fill the rack. All this was relatively easy as the body was off at the time.....................Mike
