MG MGA - Steering shaft universal
Getting ready to blast and refinish some parts, and had a minor detail question. The yoke pieces for the steering shaft u-joint don't appear to have any sign of ever having had a finish applied. Were these parts originally left bare at the factory? I looked through the Clausager book and didn't notice anything showing it in detail. |

Del, I've been looking at some original photos I took of my car prior to restoration and even though the steering shaft U-joint was covered in surface rust I can see some original black paint. I painted mine in satin black. Andy |

Thanks. It turns out that one of the pinch bolts had worked loose, and some of the looseness I had thought was in the joint was actually the yoke around the steering rack input shaft. It won't tighten up on that shaft, but the good half does, and I should have an extra assembly from my parts car in the shed somewhere. So, only a minor setback. I guess it is possible that the joint assembly was replaced at some point, and the pinch bolt wasn't properly tightened. That could explain there not having been even a trace of paint on those parts. |

Del, Barney has some information about curing the slackness in the UJ shaft clamp. See here http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/care/csm/mg214.pdf |

That's interesting, because the yoke pieces from both of my assemblies already have the hole that is shown in the service bulletin. They must have incorporated the modification into production; the letter is dated in February of '58, and both of my joint assemblies are from '59 1500s. I did see what looked like paint fragments on the second assembly, but it was pretty faint. |
