MG MGA - Stoneleigh MG Spares Day

Stoneleigh MG Spares Day on 20th February (10am to 4pm) was mentioned in another thread. Perhaps it's worth having a separate thread where we can register our interest in attending and perhaps arrange a rendezvous point and time.

I plan on being there.

Will be there Steve
What you got in mind

Perhaps one of the bars at 1230? I think there was one out the back outside in the enclosure last year.

Steve

Hi Steve (and Bob and KK)- it would be good to meet up again - 12.30 sounds good -there is an eating area somewhere central if I remember from last time- should be getting peckish by then. My mobile number is 0778 659 2306. Perhaps a copy of the MGA manual would be a more appropriate means of ID for Bob and KK!!

Bob

I'm assuming you won't be at the MASC stand?!
Dave O'Neill 2

Wish I could be there too but I will probably be in Spain (Sin MGA, unfortunately!)

How to recognise a fellow MGA owner when separated from their car?
Let me think,
dirty fingernails, a distinct lack of skin on knuckles, roasted feet and lower legs, frostbite on tips of ears and back of neck, depleted bank balance ( often combined with lots of earache from partner!) Over developed right leg muscles caused by heavy brake pedal pressure, pronounced flattening of glutus maximus muscles due to lack of seat cushioning.

But the biggest giveaway of all is the biggest grin you have ever seen!

Have a great day guys, I dont think you will need the MGA workshop manual as an identifying mark!

Last year I found the main restaurant area to be extremely busy around that time, so probably not the best rendezvous place - needle in a haystack and all that. That was why I suggested the outside bar area.

Alternatively, the MGCC usually has a display inside in the warm. So perhaps the better option would be to gather adjacent to their display MGA Roadster (bound to be one!) at 1200. That would give us time to meet and then get you off to the restaurant for food. Let's firm up on this as the RV and time unless someone has a sound alternative.

Good idea Steve - hope to see you at the MGCC stand - ( and everyone else - will be good to meet you all -can we establish an MGA BBS gathering record?) - cheers Cam .
Cam Cunningham

Just been speaking with Bob West. He will be there also.

Steve

I'll be there with M.

Seriously though, we'll be there early trying to track down a RHD dash.

Had one on the shelf for years, complete with a full set of instruments and switches, which I was convinced was RHD but when I got it down the other day it turned out to be LHD.

That's the problem with long term rebuilds - you forget things!

If anyone has a spare RHD I'd be interested.

Chris.
Chris Bond

I'll be there too - but there will be an MGOC BBS meet-up at the MGOC stand at 12:00. Now which one do we go to now..?

We could shout abuse at each other across the hall. There again, I belong to both clubs. Are they the MGA element of the forum? If so, bring them across and we will convert them to this, more active forum.

Bring your wheel balancing gismo with you and explain it. Should also keep you fit carrying it around all day!

Thanks mate - I'll be hoiking my speedo in too for a bit of expert TLC - I'll think about it. You could still come down any time and try it out...

All successful missions depend on sound planning assumptions. How was I to know that the MGCC did not have an MGA on display?!

Nevertheless, many of us did meet up and the duty photo or two were taken. We missed Pete Tipping - where were you?

It was good to see the following regular posters: Cam Cunningham, Steve Ash, Chris Bond, John Francis and Bob (the Midget man) Welch. Bob West also made an appearance. If I have missed anyone, sorry - memory at this age.

John Francis produced 2 nice engineering prototypes: a seat belt anchor point that attaches to 3 inner rear wing bolts. It raises the anchor point height to make the diagonal strap a more comfortable fit and less likely to slip off the shoulder. He also showed us his recently designed steering column bushes - look well engineered. Hopefully John will post more information on this BBS.

Overall I found the spares day lacking in MGA spares, both new and second hand. Also a serious lack of Shelley jacks. I only saw 2, and neither were for the MGA.

Steve

Steve Gyles

Nice to meet up with everyone and put faces to names.

Agree with you Steve, very lacking in A parts - came home with more bits for the Mrs B's F than the A. Also far less stalls too, virtually nothing in the area outside - strange as there seemed to be plenty of punters!

Good news regarding the DVLA no longer being interested in modified pre 72 cars. That made my day - cheers Steve!

Chris.
Chris Bond

Hi Steve, sounds as though I should have loaded my car up with my MGA and Frogeye bits and pieces

Chris

It was not just me with that impression then. There were any number of MGB and MGF stalls and even a few totally dedicated to the T-Types, but I did not see one dedicated to the MGA. A few bits and pieces scattered around, but nothing of any significance.

I had a chat with Peter Gamble on the 5-speed stand. I asked him if the Type 9 was getting in short supply, but it appears not. He currently sources them from Poland, adding that a British company is presently tooling up to make new Type 9 new gearboxes!

Hi Steve ( and the rest of the Stoneleigh party)- attached is my photo of the group (L to R) Ken Klay (back) , Steve Ash (front), John Francis,Steve Gyles, Chris Bond , Me. Bob Welsh arrived a bit later and missed the photo call. Nice to meet you all - perhaps another get together at Silverstone MG weekend - which I have promised myself that I will get to - hopefully this year. Big crowds there around mid-day to 2pm - so no shortage of buyers - No Moss stand that I could find ( they were offering VAT sales on-line!)- and no MGA specific stands but quite a few stands with MGA bits on. I noticed a new repro grille for £230 and a used original Mk2 one for £100 in need of a re-chrome - so prices are definitely going up. cheers Cam

Cam Cunningham

Moss had a big stand there. In the entrance and to the left. About a row back from the interconnecting passage way to the second hall. Not much stock on the stall though, and mainly MGB. Main business seemed to be taking orders.

Steve,
if you want to drop by Bagshot (1 min from J3 of M3) on your way to/from Brooklands on Friday, i can show you the top seat belt brackets i fitted to the rear wing fastening bolts.

Well sorry guys, I was around the MGCC stand from 11:55 to 12:15 and found none of you - I reckon there is some merit in them pink carnations! Did I go to the wrong opticians??? Found some nice things for the "A" though...

We were there, about 20ft from the MGCC counter and a similar distance from the MGOC 1200hrs forum gathering. We were blocking the main thoroughfare, so you must have walked round us or through us! I even went over to the other group to ask if one of them was you, but no one answered. Seems to be a similar reaction you get when posting on their forum!

Not on my normal route but I will see about coming back your way. I normally go over the Hogs Back and up the A3. After years of the M6 I try to keep the A off motorways. Can you email me directions: stephen dot gyles at virgin dot net.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve - How could I have missed the Moss stand? - must have walked right past it. Pete - how could you have missed us? - as Steve said - we were blocking the path going past the MGCC stand -mind you Steve didn't have his felt-tip moustache on!
Cam Cunningham

I guess you guys didn't stick out as well as the Moss stand!!! Perhaps I was looking for the young fit types who can climb in & out of "A's" !!!
Pete
P N Tipping

Steve, Cam and others.

Prices are going up - and quality is going down!

I bought a shut face panel & some windscreen top bracket from a well known supplier of MGA repair parts and when I checked them at home last night, I was less than impressed with the quality.

Now, I know that I should have checked them more closely at the show before handing over the cash but I did not expect them to be as poor as they were.

The shut panel fold has just been roughly trimmed with shears and left. Ok this is easily sorted but not the finish you should expect.

But the w/screen brackets were atrocious, out of the 10 fixing hole in the 2 brackets, 5 of them were completely out of alignment. Being returned today for a refund.

Chris.
Chris Bond

Chris..name and shame?
Gary Lock

Pete - your statement - "Perhaps I was looking for the young fit types who can climb in & out of "A's" !!!" - Ahh - that hurts - I was feeling young and fit at the time but I guess the camera doesn't lie! Chris - I agree with Gary - what supplier sold you a dud part? (If it is true they can't sue you!)- cheers Cam
Cam Cunningham

I bought six bulbs at the show - only five worked - wonder which stand I bought them off... Dud now filed under "B". We won't learn.
Cam - Sorry mate, my horrrible sense of humour?
From another fit old MGA f***
P N Tipping

OK then, it was Sportscar Metalworks!

Anyone else had problems with them?

Chris.
Chris Bond

Were they the ones right over in the corner?
I looked at a grill surround panel/shroud repair and the grill recess didn't look too neat.
Dave O'Neill 2

I was going to get them to repair some wings for me. He would not even come out and look at them, despite me making arrangements to meet him.

So I took them home.

If anyone is interested, I have 2 front and 1 LH rear.

Need restoring, but salvagable!

Colin
Colin Parkinson

The wings have now gone, sorry.
