MG MGA - SU fuel pump alternative

Hi I currently have an su fuel pump which is proving unreliable, there is a blue spark arcing across the points, I'll replace the condenser hopefully to eliminate this.
Has any one had experience of replacing the su with a different pump that is more reliable, or any trick I can use to improve reliability

The pump that I use is similar to the Q&H one above, its been on the car for over 10 years without any of the numerous problems I had with the SU pumps.

My only reservation is that it has more of a loud thud rather than the soft tick of the original SU pump.

Hi DJ,
I have just bought a Facet type pump ( actually made by Purolator) off ebay - link below. My pump failed last week and the PO had fitted a non standard type instead of the SU - so metal unions have already been cut off and rubber pipes put in - so no problem about originality decisions. I have yet to fit this pump but will report back when I have the car running tomorrow.

I think it is the other way around. The Purolator pump is made by Facet. The primary objection to the cube pump is that it is very NOISY. In recent years there have been notable early failures of the Facet pumps. The cube pump may now be obsolete, replaced by a black plastic covered pump that may be a little less noisy. Once they have earned a reputation for being unreliable, it is tough to put your faith in a new one.

I had a Facet pump that I was going to install on my TD but installed it on my recently purchased MGA. The pump appears to work well but it is very noisy. I’m sure that there are cheaper alternatives that will not make such a racket.

My Facet pump works great but watch the pressure output. Mine is rated too high for the H4 and I have a pressure regulator fitted in line.

I have an ECCO plastic bodied fuel pump in my '66 B-GT. Got it from Moss. So far-so-good, but have only had it installed this summer.

I have been told that the fuel pumps fitted to MGAs (HP?) were a new type and have reached the end of their useful life. I have given up on SU pumps and fitted Fuelflos (made in NZ?) to both of my MGA's. Fuelflos are light and don't need mounting (in fact the rubber hoses are enough!)

I'm using an E8016S type of pump similar to what Barney mentioned. Easy to find on ebay. It's not expensive, simple to fit, and seems to be very reliable.

I have the long tubular bodied Facet pump fitted which works great but it did have the machine gun rattle when working hard.
I fitted the Facet "rubber bobbin" mounting kit (plus an earth wire between the pump body and the chassis)

It is really quiet in operation now and I have to listen hard to hear if its working ok.

Like Steve said, you may need a pressure regulator to reduce the output pressure at low throttle openings as it can push fuel past the float valve.
