MG MGA - Sun Visor

Can anyone help with dimensions of the MGA sun visor. I'm going to make a set but need some basic info on size and possibly what their made of. Barney gives a good picture but not enough for making it.http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/coupe/cp115.htm

Sun? You get sun?

MB, I understand that a sun visor may seem unecessary (especially from a North Wales perspective) but on a clear day when I drive on the M27 east at 8.00am I'm looking straight into the low sun for 30 mins and it gets tiring trying to read the road and I don't like using sun glasses. Autumn and winter is worse with the low sun in the morning.

John,
My son Ian's coupe (ex USA)) had sun visors fitted. I do not know if they were original but they do look very "period". From memory they look very simple to manufacture, would you like me to photograph and measure them for you?

Gday the visors on our coupe are 430mm x 120mm Bob
B WALKER

BW, thanks for info, I'm only guessing but should the 430mm dim read 230? 430 seems a little large. Tony, a photograph would help a lot, many thanks if you could manage it. At the moment I'm not sure of how they are made: vinyl over hardboard? but are the cut edges heat welded or trimmed?. The one in Barney's pic is trimmed but this may not be original. I aim to use some spare head lining material and chrome hinges as per the picture.

John, may still have one or pair of my old set in my shed. If I find them am happy to give to you ...as per usual free, you just pay the postage. Let me know and I will look next week when I vidsit the stores shed

Gday JH, the measurements in my first post are correct I'll try to download a photo. Bob

I have sun visors in my 1600 coupe bought from Simon Robinson when he was dismantling MGA's at Harrogate about 30 years ago. From memory, similar to Austin A30 (and/or Morris Minor)?
Barry Bahnisch

B WALKER, -- I've never seen one like that in a Coupe. I presume it was Australian made like most of the fabric parts on Ausi CKD cars. Anyone recognize the bracket? Are other CKD Coupes like this?
Barney Gaylord

Gday Barney ,I have seen another coupe at an Australian Natmeet with the same visor but I have no idea if they are specific to ckd cars. Here is a closer photo. Bob

B WALKER

Bob, thats a big visor and if its original I suspect its just for CKD cars.
J H Cole

It must be borne in mind that MGA coupes were fully imported. Not sure if visors were standard but imported cars often had "extras" as standard. My visors are similar to the ones in the early photos, ie definitely hinged in the middle. Would probably be the same as some other BMC product, Austin A35 may well be correct.
Barry Bahnisch

John,
Here is a picture of the sun visors from my son's Coupe. From reading the above comments and looking at the images, I do not think that these visors can be original but they may have been a period after market fitment. The visors were fixed to the same metalwork as the above screen headliner trim.
Dimensions are L 14"x W 4", material is 1/4" perspex although anything reasonably rigid could be used.
The metal parts are chromium plated and simply but carefully constructed.
If after looking at the picture you require further detail of the brackets, just let me know.

Many thanks Tony for the pictures and dimensions. I think this is as far as I'm going to get information wise and now have to bite the bullet and start making them.

JH,
Please could you send me a personal message direct to the email address above. I am in the latter stages of a rebuild of a '58 coupe, and also have a friend just across the line completing another coupe.
Maybe we can do something together.
Peter.
