MG MGA - tappet inspection covers ?

How tight should the nuts be, I have just found that both on mine are loose, Vin

The cover bolts should be torqued to 2 ft pounds according to my autobook manual, cheers, Glenn

My A55 workshop manual says 5 pound-feet.

Don't forget the sealing washers. I found an amazing amount of oil can leak through a split/missing one.

I have a combined MGA/MGB Owners Workshop Manual. It mentions 2 types of cover. I am not sure if both were available on the MGA. The shallow pressed cover is 2lb ft; the deep pressed cover is 5 lb ft. So you are both right.

I am also not sure how you know what type you have unless you have one of each to compare!!

It is certainly an area that needs sealing properly. It was where I had the most oil weepage when I did my recent overhaul.

Toyota part # 00295-00103 (FIPG)black This is what Toyota uses instead of a pan gasket on all their cars now. Best sealant available. $13.82 for a 3oz tube. Seals almost anything.

Hi, I believe the MGA & early MGB used the shallow pressed covers and the later MGB's used the deep pressed covers, if memory serves. The deep cover bolts need to be torqued to 5 ft lbs. That amount of torque on the shallow covers will cause them to leak! Cheers, Glenn

best to upgrade the covers with later MGB one's and thier sealing washers..these use a rubber compound type gasket.. if you use the orig covers make sure they are not bowed in and knock em straight if they are.. a 2 1/4"length of 5/16 fine stud, screwed in the hole with locktite, calculate position of plate to give slight gasket squeeze and put a nut and then washer on the inside..add sealant to gasket and washer..place cover on add another external washer and sealant and use a nylock nut and screw up tight..the deal is to sandwich the plate and washers..the squish amount of gasket is also critical..this method, carefully executed should give a leak free cover needing no further attention..
