MG MGA - Tax and MOT

Just got new form V11 to tax my car but I can't do it because my application is rejected on line and on phone because they 'cannot trace a suitable MOT'. Of course the car is Historic and shouldn't need an MOT but the form is marked as 'appropriate MOT required'. On phone I was told this is because I already have an MOT (expires 25 jan) so they are going to go on demanding I get a new one. In fact I would anyway for my own security but it's pretty daft that this locks me into always needing an MOT on an Historic car. Does anyone have any idea how to stop this piece of nonsensical burocratic incompetence?

I filled in the Declaration of Exemption from MOT (form V112) and posted it to them with a copy of my V5 and a covering letter. They amended my records.

Just let the MOT expire on 25th and the DVLA system will 'drop off' the MOT requirement. It is because the system shows your car with a current MOT that it brings that requirement forward. Go to renew your tax at the end of the month, once the MOT has expired and you should be OK.
If you get an MOT again, the system will reactivate the requirement though, so it might be best to get an "annual inspection" (akin to an MOT) that does not get entered onto the DVLA system.

What year is your MGA, if like mine it's a 1961 car then nothing changes?

It doesn't change if it is 1960 car either! The rule only applies to cars manufactured before the 1st of January 1960.

Car is 59. Have got new MOT and sent exemption form. We will see what happens next year!
