MG MGA - Timing Cover Rubber seal Orientation.
I have the radiator out and pulled off the crankshaft pulley to find that the the timing cover rubber shaft seal had been partially shredded and the circular spring exposed . The cover is the type with an externally pushed in seal.( I replaced the original type/ hairy internal seal a few years ago to cut down leaks ) I have a replacement seal and about to reassemble . I installed the previous..now damaged.. seal with the lip on the internal side and circular spring facing the pulley. ....this seemed the obvious way but given the damage would appreciate advice whether this orientation is correct . |

Dat spring, he go inside! Most of those seal now are double lip, for about 30 or 40 years, but the outer lip is not spring loaded. FRM |

Maybe a new pulley or a speedisleeve is also called for |

Garter spring runs in the oil. Flat side of seal faces the dirt. Slightest groove in the pulley hub screws up a seal in short order. Solution is Speedi-Sleeve. |

Maybe the seal housing was not properly centred. I always push the pulley into place to centre the timing chain cover before tightening its bolts. Steve |

Will replace and right way round ...and closely inspect the shaft to see if I need a sleeve. Also will follow Steve's idea to get good centring of the seal. Thanks to all for advice. |
