MG MGA - Tiny Nut to secure Hood Header Rail Catch

Hi All,

When rechroming a wingscreen frame it's necessary to remove the center hood frame catch AFH6773 (later cars only)from the chrome frame.

Moss sell the tiny screws but now can't offer the matching chrome nut

AFH5457 - Chrome Screw
AFH5458 - Chrome Nut (Nylock?)

Does anyone know what thread this nut maybe ?

Thanks
Mark

I would put money on these being originally 5 BA which was a common fastener in those days with 1/8" holes.

I got my fasteners from Todd Clarke and his are not 5 BA; I would guess they are 5-44 UNF. Nut and screw are both stainless. I think your chances of getting 5 BA stainless are very low and even lower for a S/S nyloc nut.

You might be able to get the 5-44 stainless nyloc nuts online from the US but you'd probably have to buy a large quantity. It would be a lot easier to get both nuts & screws from TC.

5 BA and 5-44 are quite close but the BA TPI is 43 and the nuts bind after a turn.................Mike

I have recently been playing around with a mirror mount which used those screws to hold it in position. Considering the number of times I dropped one of those nuts and it rolled under the seat rail or disappeared in some other hard-to-find location, I realise I had a lucky escape!

Would a stainless dome nut (use it with blue Loctite) be an acceptable alternative?

Nylocs are available for 4ba and 6ba, but seem to skip the 5ba size for some reason.

I have found that often enough, the original type fasteners are still available if one will take the time to look. Even in cases where vendors who cater to our cars have substituted fasteners which are easier to source. I have a few bins containing nyloc fasteners left over from Todd Clarke's kits, which went unused because I was able to source the correct Aerotite nuts.

Hi Mark. I’ve checked on my car and both ring and open 4BA spanners fit, also an M7 ring fits but only on one nut. Although I didn’t remove the hook to check the threads BA sizes are used elsewhere on our cars and as the bolts haven’t been replaced whilst in my ownership I think it a safe bet nut and bolt are 4BA. Small lock washers are used.
Hope it helps
John.

I've purchased a couple of 4BA stainless nuts from ebay, alas not domed or nylock.

Twin Cam SPL lists this nut as AFH5458
1600 pushrod SPL lists this nut as AFH5455

I will update if the nut fits screw AFH5457 in a few days.

Thanks for everyone's help, including Barney offline.

I can confirm the Stainless Steel 4BA nut's fit both the new Moss screw and an original factory screw I've had re-chromed. I will note this in my SPL book.

Quite why Moss can't record this is a mystery.

Thanks to all for their help & one step closer to having a hood fitted.
