MG MGA - Top (Hood) wing bolts and socket?
I have just stripped one of my top (hood) wing bolts putting the top up at the weekend (yes - I know it is illegal to put them up in Australia but the boss would not go with me unless it was). These wing bolts look like they are 5/16" BSF, 22 TPI - another oddity - can this be confirmed? Are there any tricks in replacing the sockets i.e. Heli-coils etc. What are the quality of the Moss replacements like? Regards Mike (1600 roadster) |

Been there, and have a variety of choices for how to fix it, including a source for 5/16-22 Helicoils. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/top/top109.htm |

Mike Out of curiosity why are erected soft tops illegal in Australia? Steve |

I just welded standard 5/16 nuts to my frame, seems to have worked for the last 20 years.... |

Steve, Because we live in God's country where the sun always shines, the skies are blue, the roads are good and there aren't too many Poms or septic tanks. (only joking boys)! Regards Mike |

Thanks Barney - I should have looked at your site first (as usual). Mike |

Mike Good one. I guess I fell for your Ozzie humour. You can always have my hood for parts. It never ever goes up! (Can't go up; no lugs on the screen). A useless bit of weight behind the seat. We breed real men and women here. Steve |

Mike, I have often done what Dominic suggests, weld a new nut in place. Give me a call this weekend and we will fix it. Barry |
