MG MGA - Track Rod Ends

I need a new track rod end, by default I will go to Moss.

Are there any options/warnings re UK suppliers?

The rubber boots last about six months, I believe.

They were quite a common item fitted to a number of cars. May be worth trying your local Motor Factors to see if they have them in stock or are able to get them for you.

John Bray

As John says they were fitted to most British cars in the 60s - 80s. Try the MGB Hive as an alternative source - they may even have the correct early ones with a grease nipple.
Cam Cunningham

Talk to somebody, Paul.

I would give Brown & Gammons a ring; Ron Gammons used to campaign an MGA in the Monte Carlo Challenge - has won it, in fact - and it would be worth asking what the workshop would put on the boss's car.
Nick and Cherry Scoop

Not sure where the 6 months for the rubber comes from. I bought a pair from Bob West in 1997 and still going strong. They have the grease nipple.

Paul, I would try B & G for anything with rubber.

Parts supply has changed a lot since then.
Many replacement parts now have very poor rubber components, and TREs are no exception.

I've built two MGBs in the last fifteen years and all my parts have been supplied by MGB Hive. Every one is still as supplied without any replacements having been made
Iain MacKintosh

Leacey have them at £7.20 and £8.40 so it might be worth giving them a call regarding the difference. I have found that they are generally the cheapest for like for like parts of all the suppliers.

Leacy are great because of the free shipping. I now default to them because it makes a big difference with regular orders.

We bought a pair of tie rod boots for our reno and they cracked before we turned a wheel
Bob Walker

Another rubber part which seems to fail prematurely is the lower trunnion seal on the MGB, which is also used on the top and bottom trunnion on the A.

Moss and Sussex MG are now stocking a neoprene version of this seal under the part number AAA1323X.

Seemed to me that Paul was asking about the outer rod ends, while many of you appear to be talking about the bellows boots over the inner rod ends, between the rack and the rod itself. Have there now been reports of bad grease boots on the replacement outer tie rod ends?

If so, there are polyurethane replacement boots that will fit.
Rawlins

I can't vouch for anyone else, but I was referring to the (outer) track rod ends.
Dave O'Neill 2

Ditto.

Thanks for all the comments and very glad I asked with all the talk around the rubber. In the end I thought would play safe and rang Bob West. I bought a pair and one is now fitted. They were more expensive but he said they were good and they seem to be.

Interestingly he had heard of/seen poor rubber components in other areas but he hadn't heard of any problems with these on outer track rod end's.
