MG MGA - Tubeless wire wheels
Does anyone know how to convert a wire wheel to tubeless. I have origional Dunlop 60 spoke painted wires and would like to be rid of the tubes. I have read that using silicone RTV will do the job but there wasn't much detail on how do do it correctly (and safely). I would think that there would be a little more to it than just smearing silicone over the nipples. I am converting from Bias ply tires to radials and heard that inner tubes hinder the performance of the radial tire. If that information is incorrect then I would be willing to go with radial inner tubes. Can someone help enlighten me on either subject. Thanks...norm

I have been running very happily for years with tubes on my MGs and my Jaguar. If it is correct that the tubes hinder performance, then it is not noticeable to the average chap! There is a need for obvious care when fitting and there have been reports of this thread of tubes damaged by labels left inside the tyre (tyre). Neil

thanks for all your input. I will probably go with the tubes due to the cost of sealing the wheels. Thanks Norm

Norm, I love the Dayton tubeless wires. They allow me to simply carry a tire plug kit and electric compressor in lieu of a spare tire in the boot, saving a bunch of space. I recall a thread on just your question in the archives that spoke of a specific sealant used in the plumbing world. Doug

J Dick, We sealed a set of wires using some comercial underground pipe wrap and black urethane sealant. I think the product was something like PJ 7 available at Home Depot. So far there have been no leaks. Have a good day! John

| I've been very pleased with my new Dayton tubeless wires, the paranoia level has decreased a bit. Not that I recommend trying this at home, but the rim where the wires attach on the Daytons is coated with a high quality silicone layer over the nipples. Very nice wheels, un-measurable run out, smooth as glass at any speed on the freeway. Mine are 72 spoke bead lace chrome 6J X 15, replacing the over the counter (at the BMC / Leyland dealer) TR6 wheels I installed in 1969. Russ

Thanks all, I have decided to be safe and use the tubes. I don't need the headache of filling up the tires everytime I want to go for a spin. When I do the frame off resto i'll probably drop some coin on the tubless Daytons. Thanks for all your input...Norm
