MG MGA - Tyres

Hi Guys
Looking for some 185/65x15 tyres to fit my new alloy wheels. Has anyone got any experience of makes and suggestions for a good tyre for the A.
Thanks Brian

I use Vredstein T very happily, just bought a new set

Brian
I have fitted a set of Firestone Firehawk TZ 200 in that size and they are fantastic.

I think there is a newer model of this out now.

They are usually fitted to Volkwagen and Volvos.

Cheers

Hi I have Toyo Proxies CF1 fitted to one car and Yokohama A dive fitted to the other and both are excellent.

I have the same Vredstein's as Dominic and I really like them. I was running 195/60 R15 Michelin Pilots before and they never looked right. With the Vredstein's the sidewall ratio is a little taller and a little fuller and it fits the wheel wells very nicely. Plus, they are not as harsh as the Pilots.

Some guys here run the vintage look Michelin's and really like them but I could not justify spending almost 4 times the price vs. the Vredstein's.

I also run the Vredsteins and find that they have a good ride quality and grip. Plus they look like they belong there.

Just for interest did you chaps have tubes fitted?
J Hughes

Interesting and timely comment J Hughes. Very recently there has been a thread running on the Twin Cam Yahoo site with some owners being advised that their tyre shops won't fit tubes to modern radial tubeless tyres. Some safety issue apparently. I run 165x15 Toyo 330's fitted with tubes on the standard peg drive wheels, incidently! Confused, yes, worried, no!

No tubes. I am running Dayton tubeless rims. But big tire shops here in Japan also will not fit tubes to radial tires. The mom and pop ones might.

I seem to recall that I was using dedicated tubes for radial tires when I had my MGB (maybe meant for truck tires?). I did go in and kind of smooth the inside of the tire out first as the casting wasn't great. Drove daily for almost 5 years with no issues.

I am running 60 spoke wire wheels. Dunlop copies. I have always had radial tubes in them. Just don't try bias ply tubes with radial tires.

Hi Dominic
Thanks for your advise. There appears to be 2 types of Vredsteins tyre an 88T and a 92T XL. Having checked the 2 they can carry different weights. Can you let me know which tyres you have fitted.
Thanks Brian

The new ones are these: 87T

I would just pick the one closest to your laden weight. The light truck tyres are stronger for off-roading and Dave Godwin adventures!

I'll be shopping for Vredesteins locally, thanks for the information. I have 4 1/2 inch 60 spoke wires, but with adapters on the rear so my rear track is a bit wider than normal. Will 175 tires fit rather than the 165 / 15.

I see a 175 / 15 wide tread tire listed

Any thoughts?

At last a picture of the new tyres and new wheels on the car. The umbrella was found abandoned at the station by the Rhine falls.

Love those Minilites Dominic, they would be my 1st choice if I didn't already have the Racemettle alloys.

They are a great looking compromise between wire and disc wheels for those who can't make up their minds up which they prefer.

Dominic,
Presumably the umbrella was abandoned by Sherlock Holmes after it helped him survive the fall? Car looks great.

Wrong falls for Moriarty. Those were the Rheichenbach falls, which are 160km or 100 miles away from the place I found the umbrellas.

Wire wheels aren't practical with a supercharger, and I keep cracking steel wheels, so I want to keep my last five of them in a useable state.

The wheels are Minator from Moss, and I bought them as a response to the GBP tanking after the Brexit vote, so they are my Brexit bonus!

I know, Dominic but it was too good an opportunity to miss.
