MG MGA - Unified nuts
I have finished checking the threads on the 'project' fasteners and nuts. Some of the nuts (90%) have 1/8" dia. connecting circles. Is this to ID it as 'Unified' or is this a makers mark. If they don't have this mark, does that mean they are American made aftermarket replacements ? Thanks Curt |

You are correct Curt, the three circle mark shows that the threads were British Standard Unified. I dont think it is compulsory to mark the set screws and nuts although it does help you to identify them. I think that the threads were unified during the First World War. I have found this link which explains it. (no I didnt know all this stuff, just some of it :-) Cheers Colyn |

Sorry, forgot to add the link. http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=pPoNZB4xqHoC&pg=PA87&lpg=PA87&dq=markings+on+nuts+with+unified+threads&source=bl&ots=oSO6fbroH3&sig=if7rNzN1kIGZvQHQde-z9nekjVQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwin8-arjM_MAhWoIcAKHVR9CZ8Q6AEIJDAA#v=onepage&q=markings%20on%20nuts%20with%20unified%20threads&f=false |

That takes me back to my school days Colyn. Does anyone use trig tables now? Useful reference book. Steve |

https://www.britishfasteners.com/threads/unc.html If you move around on this page, it explains the various British fasteners. This is a much bigger issue on old British motorcycles than British cars. |

I have a feeling that many don't even know what trig refers to! I have spent a number of years training people to use AutoCad and invariably when I reach the point where I have to explain the method of drawing tangents, 95% don't know what a tangent is! Similarly chord and even... parallel (better than 95% on that one, fortunately). |

Maybe the term " Unified Nuts" is just a collective noun referring to us MGA owners! ☺ Colyn |

It's funny how you forget stuff Steve, speaking of tables, it reminded me that I found a copy of my old school "log tables" the other day. (which we used instead of calculators back in the 60s) I couldnt remember how to use them! Colyn |
Colyn Firth |
Well, does anyone here remember how to use a slide rule...? |
George G. |
I saw the post headline and thought it must be about The Donald's supporters ...... |
Neil Ferguson |
Neil - Good one :) By the way, there is a group of British car enthusiasts in Colorado that call themselves the Whitworth Nuts. Cheers - Dave |

My first year in high school (1978) was the year they removed slide rules from the curriculum. I am still disappointed that I never learned to use them. We did use log tables though; I can't remember how to use them. Nor can I do calculus any more. I keep thinking I should get my son's maths text book and relearn it. |

I studied maths at Uni so should have no excuses about forgetting. We always used to talk about the constipated mathemetician who worked it all out with logs Bom bom! Sorry |
