MG MGA - Water pu,mp pulley alignment

Hi

I had leaky water pump on my engine MGB 18G 3 Bearing. So eventually having found the one that fits I now find the pulley does not align with the dynamo and crank pulley. The block to pulley on the old pump is 3.75" and on the new pump 4.125". Is it possible to move the pulley flange further onto the shaft if so how do I do it? I suspect it is an interference fit. If not what are my alternatives.

Thanks

I think you have the wrong pump

Hi Dominic

I ordered a GWP114 which I was led to believe was an early 3 brg. pump. When it arrived the impeller was to big so I sent it back and got it replaced with a GWP115 which is the smaller impeller MGB 3 brg. pump. This is the one that is the problem. I guess the MGA pump GWP103 is the one that was originally fitted but why does the correct pump not line up on the engine? Did some 18G engines use an MGA pump or has the engine been modified to take an MGA pump. As far as I am aware these are the only three pumps available for the MGA and MGB engines. The cost of sending pumps back and return postage already exceeds the cost of the pump so I would prefer to modify the one I have if possible.

When I bought my car a previous owner had put an incorrect fan pulley on which was apparently too short and he had got it to line up with the other two pulleys by inserting a spacer between pump and pulley. Someone told me it was an MGB pulley. Anyway I got hold of a correct MGA pulley which was longer but identical in other respects. I've just measured my (MGA) pulley and it is 2" long. I sold the short one years ago................................Mike

Hi Mike

Thanks for that information. My pulley is 2" long. The problem is when the PO does all the changes ie putting in an 1800 engine, one is never sure what bits were used or modified to fit.

I have just come in from the garage and have managed to move the pulley flange down the shaft by 3/8" (heat and a BFH) so everything lines up now. Just painted the pump so I will install tomorrow and put everything else back together with hopefully no water leaks.

Just in case someone reads this thread in years to come in the archives I got my story the wrong way around. My original, but incorrect, pulley was too long not too short. In fact there seems to be one like it on Ebay now (item 221208612040) which is 2.5" deep. The seller claims there were two sizes for the MGA, maybe this longer pulley is for a twin cam not an MGB?

Anyway Barry glad your problem is sorted.......................Mike
