MG MGA - Wheelers and dealers

Like it or hate it, I notice that the MGA is featured on Wheelers and Dealers on 6th April.

You can get Discovery on Sky but if you dont have that you will need to access the internet, where you can download it for free. Some packages other than sky may already have this. I was surprised that on BT this is not available. Although earlier series of 'Wheeler Dealers' can be found on Quest.

The MGA showing is the new series (12) so will I guess be on Quest in the future. It's rather bizarre to see how Edd and Mike have aged and 'grown' over the years! I saw Edd in the crowd at the NEC last week - he's a big guy. Make an excellent lock in rugby (or would have done!)

I see that both Classic Cars for Sale and Classic and Sports Cars have articles on MGA in this weeks/months respective editions. Both Iris Blue as well.

$35,000 seemed very expensive for what it was,a quick coat of paint, wrong dashboard, wrong spinners etc etc, I would imagine it would all need to be redone properly at some point

Yes GC you maybe right in your assertion. I agree with the comments on the wrong dash etc and the spinners but the outcome I felt was quite stunning.

Wheeler Dealers, in my view is one of the best of the resto programmes. For better or worse they effectively raise the profile of the classic car movement which I would have thought is to be encouraged.

Over the years and this is now the twelth a range of varied models have been examined and of course we know that the labour costs for Edd China's time are never included. However, he comes across as a very knowledgable and practical guy. We of cuurse have no idea how long the work took but presumably it was undertaken in a far shorter time frame than most professional restorers would take. Certainly we saw little of the stste of the chassis. etc, etc other than Mike's view that 'it was very solid'. Npnetheless, I was interested in the way in which the oil leak was resolved and the engine stripdown appeared to be thorough with the necessary checks on what seemed to be a a reasonable 1600 unit. The brakes were covered in a reasonable amount of detail and the other matters seemingly resolved.

I agree with you on the dash, which was not original and looked very sparse without the radio, central horn push and other important features. There was also a fair amount of bling added for a 1500, the covered dash looked to be a la Twin Cam/1600mk2 de-luxe? Whilst the conversion to wires certainly added to the overall appearance of the car, though as you rightly mentioned, why the three eared spinners?

Initially the decision to paint the car black, as that was the original, seemed to be a little doubtful. However, the outcome and the rechromed bumpers etc gave a superb finish. Shame that the external lock on the bootlid was retained.

I think that the final outcome (though no mention of weather gear - but would you need in the Californian climate?!) was excellent. The price which worked out to around £23k was a fair result. They did outlay around £6-£7k on parts, resparay etc (though no indication of the time and labour involved on Edd's behalf). Nonetheless, not bad at all.

Others I am sure will disagree with my comments but that's the great thing about debate.

On an entirely different topic I see that some folk were unhappy with Jodie Kidd presenting the Classic Car programme along with Quentin Nicholls. I have been very impressed, she is articulate showed her metal driving the XK120 in the Classic Mille- Milia' and rallying the mini with Paddy Hopkirk. Yeah pretty good! And why not have a woman for goodness sake!!

Hi Jerry, I agree it did look quite nice but there is a big difference between a quick blow over for a program, I think they also sprayed over the piping?,and a good restoration that you would be happy to live with and pay for, they did the same with a frogeye which also was a bit of a lash up or so I was led to believe and I would have thought that $35,000 would get you a top notch car but I maybe long out of touch

cheers Gordon

For those that haven't got the Discovery channel the episode is on YouTube. Just search wheeler dealers.
