MG MGA - Where to send wire wheels for referb

I'm getting a project car soon and I already know that I don't want to mess with the wheels myself. I'd like to send them out to be cleaned or blasted, trued and painted. Possibly new tires at the same facility too.

Who does a proper job, stateside?

There are two places here in So Cal who do good work, but surely there is someone on your side on the continent. The shops out here are Valley Wire Wheel and Pico Wire Wheel.

I have just had a spoke break on one of mine resulting in an MOT fail. I had the wheels blasted and powder coated about 3 years ago - and they looked very good. But taking the wheel to a repairer - he said there was nothing he could do as the nipples were seized rock solid - so I ended up buying 2 new ones for the front. So my answer is - maybe buy new wheels - at least you will know they are good and they will probably not cost much more than a blast and refurb - and the new ones are tubeless!

Hendrix Wire Wheel in North Carolina would probably be your best bet

Price it out first. You may find that the price of a new wheel is much less expensive than a re-furb. And they come with a warranty.

New is a choice. We'll see....

They cost almost as much to refurb properly as to buy new, and you will still have wheels with worn splines and spoke nipples that wont turn. Buy new.

How do they seal the spoke holes for tubeless, and can that be done for older wheels?
Art Pearse

It's a silicon material applied to the inside of the rim. You can seal older wheels but they should be blasted clean first. Keep in mind that should you need to true the wheels, it may break the seal. You also need to take care in changing tires so the sealer isn't damaged.

If you wind up buying new wheels, by all means replace the splined hubs while you are at it. Putting new wheels on worn hubs will cause the splines of your new wheels to wear rapidly. My dad bought new wheels and hubs, installed the wheels but never got around to doing the hubs. After a few years of running that way, the new wheels had worn splines (dangerously, in the case of the rear wheels), even though they otherwise were OK. I ended up buying new wheels again to go with the new hubs that were still in a box.
