MG MGA - Windscreen wipers

Has anyone bought new wiper arms and blades lately and is happy with the fit and general quality?.............................Mike

Mike,

One of my wiper arms broke last year when the rivets came undone during a prolonged trip in the rain.

I replaced them with a pair of 'Tex' arms and blades which seem OK although the finish wasn't that good and I had to de-bur the edges of the arms.

Mike, I got mine from MG Owners Club in Swaversey, Cambridge in 1991. Still going strong!

Thanks John,Barry, The new blades I have are Tex but there is no name on the arms and I think it may be just the arms which are bad. There is a little bit of slop at the spline end which leads to insufficient pressure on the screen.

I'll give MGOC a call tomorrow but after 22 years they may not use the same supplier although if I get some that last half that time I'll be happy.

It's doubtful I'd get through the MOT with wipers that clean not much more than half the swept area! ..........................Mike

Spring tension on the 'Tex' arms is a lot stronger than the ones I replaced.

I have had issues with both pairs of the "Tex" replacement wiper arms I've bought for both my MGA and my MGB in the last year. Both sets are loose fits on the splines and fall off the drive splines in use. Yet the originals still fit firmly on the splines, so it appears to be an issue with manufacturing tolerances in the newer Tex branded wiper arms rather than wear in my two MGs' splines. When I checked with my MG parts retailer he, predictably, said he'd never heard of any problems before, and that my cars' splines must obviously be the cause ,
I kept my original MGB items and will go back to them. I can only find one old MGA arm unfortunately; I suspect it's an old spare I had and that I unwisely tossed out the original (firm fitting) MGA arms that I took off.

Thanks folks.

I've just perused the Tex website and they seem to do a spoon arm called 'Wedge lock', in the U80 range, which was designed for slightly worn splined shafts.

Presumably they are tightened up with the screw at the end. This sounds good but the snag is that the tightening screw is rather visible.
Has anyone tried these?

One thing that worried me was that the diameter of the splined end (presumably ID)is given as 14.8mm by Tex whereas I've measured my spline OD at 13.3mm. Surely I can't have that much wear?

I had the problem of wiper arms falling off all the time until I junked the Moss repros in favour of a pair of original wheel boxes. The problem disappeared.

I have the wedge fixing arms and can vouch for their effectiveness (if MGA wipers could ever be called effective) if the correct wheel box bosses are also fitted. If the bosses are too small, even the wedge ones don't keep the arms on.

Hi Mike

The wiper arm with the "wedge" fixing and screw was fitted to the BGT I bought last year. The arms and blades are both marked TEX. They are very tight on the wheel box spindle and will never come loose.

I also have the adjustable wedge type on my car.

Well I've just ordered a pair of the Tex 'wedge-lock' arms following all the recommendations above (U80735). Thanks all...............................................Mike
