MG MGA - Wiper Direction

The wipers in my '58 A turn left to right, but the folks at Tex Automotive (they make upgraded wipers and arms in England) tell me the left-hand drive MGA wipers moved right to left. Are mine operating backwards?

The blade should be as positioned on this photo. If you have arms that are positioned the other way, you have RHD arms on the car.

To change, buy new LHD arms. Remove existing arms. Remove the nuts on the wiper spindles. Under the dash, rotate the wiper boxes 180 degrees, so that the cable runs the other side to the current setup. Then replace the chrome nuts, and switch the wipers on without and arms fitted, and then switch off so everything stops in the park position.

Then refit the arms and wiper blades in the parked position.

As noted, wipers should park under the drivers nose. If they park on the other side you may have to change the wiper arms from RHD to LHD style (or vice versa).

You do NOT have to touch the wheelboxes to make the spindles park the other way. In fact I don't think the wheelboxes will physically fit under the body cowl upside down. To change the park position of the spindles, loosen some screws on the wiper motor and rotate the round parking commutator cover 180 degrees. From there small rotational adjustment of the cover can give the best park position at extreme end of travel of the arms.

Clausager page 21 shows pictures of both RHD and LHD cars with the wipers parked in front of the driver. The note states "The parking position for the wipers is always in front of the drivers on both LHD and RHD cars"

Barney is not 100% correct.

The wheelboxes DO fit when rotated 180 degrees. The point is not to reset the park position at the extreme end of travel, it is to be able to set the direction of sweep to allow wipers to work in the opposite direction (you need this when you switch between LHD and RHD arms, otherwise the arms end up wiping the cowl).

It's also much easier to set the park position correctly by the method I use (removing the arms, cycling the motor, and refitting the arms) than getting your hand and tools in the very small space between the pedal box and the wiper motor. I have small hands, and I can't get them into that space without a lot of blood and swearing, not to mention being hunched double under the bonnet to do it, and it always ends up that I reposition the arms.
