MG MGA - Wiper Motor

I looked through the archives and steal have no clue (should the wiper motor self PARK when the switch is turned off)? Or just stop? This is an early 1957

It should self park. This stop position is adjustable. Look at Barney's site..

Thanks Dave I looked one more time a Barney's site and all wires are in the right place but will not park.

1) From Barney's web-sit I have neg. ground car with a Alt. & no control box.

A) Green on 2 from fuse block
B)Black/green on 1 to wiper switch
C)Black on E to ground.

Wipers should park when switched off. However, if you switch off ignition when wipers are running they will stop in mid stroke, as the wiper motor gets power from the switched fuse.

Inside the wiper mechanism is a wheel with a copper inlay with a gap in it and a brass/bronze wiper making contact with the inlay. This provides an electrical path when the switch is off until the wheel turns far enough for the wiper to find the gap in the copper and break the connection. Moving the relative position of wiper and wheel sets the park position.

If the wiper is broken or bent you will not get power to the motor to self park.

One other possibility is the ground wire running to 'E' on the motor. If that's not a good ground, then the motor will stop immediately when you turn it off even if your ignition is on. Certainly the wiper mechanism problem that Malcolm refers to can also cause your problem, but I'd double check the ground wire first just because it's easier.

Just get a wire with an alligator clip on both ends, then clip one end to the 'E' terminal and the other end to a known good ground. If the motor then parks when you switch it off, you've found the problem. If not, then it's time to look inside the motor.

Thanks LP great idea, did not make any deff. We are off in the morning 200+ miles round trip will take the WM out next week an have a look inside.

The last two pictures show details of the parking commutator and how to adjust it. If the motor always stops immediately in any position when switched off, the brown wire may be disconnected, or the commutator contact arm may be bend or broken.
