MG MGA - Wiper motor problems
Hoping to get to Goodwood breakfast club this morning my wipers would not work. So spent most of the morning checking wiring and the switch so isolated to wiper motor . Took it out and stripped it down only to find no brushes left and it had started wearing away the brush holders. The commutator has seriously worn as well . So does anybody have a good working motor? does not have to be complete , just a good armature would help me out . Moss price £150 exchange !! for a motor . Help ! Roy

Spin the armature in a power drill while you file down the commutator until it is smooth. Clean copper particles out from between the commutator segments. Install new brushes. I don't understand how it can wear away the brush holders, as they run with a lot of clearance from the commutator.

Hi Barney , wish it was that simple . The carbon brushes had worn down so much the brush holders had run on the commutator and worn it down about 1/4 inch down in the middle and torn a segment out. The brush housing was full of copper dust, never seen anything like it and i had no idea how it had run .

| Roy, I may have a solution for you. I have a loose armature that I picked up with a bunch of loose parts a few years ago. I have no use for it so you are welcome to it. I cannot 100% guarantee it is for a MGA wiper motor but it looks to be correct. The communicator is not worn at all. Send me an email if you are interested. John

There's a couple of motors on ebay right now. There's also one, expensive, from a guy who refurbishes them address: steve@stevehunt.demon.co.uk in Birmingham. Never used him but might be helpful. John
