MG MGA - Wipers - left to right conversion?
Hi, My car is finally set for it's MOT tomorrow, but I have noticed that the wipers wipe as for a left hand drive car, and mine is right and drive. It's not the original wiper motor nor the original wiper boxes, all sourced from different ads on eBay over the years. Is there a simple conversion, e.g swapping wires on the motor, or is it a bit more involved to get the wipers to wipe the right way for us Brits? Cheers, Grant :-) |

Grant Have a look at Barney's site. This page covers it: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et111.htm , but there are plenty more pages to browse on MGA ELECTRICAL - FUNCTION & TESTING and MGA ELECTRICAL - RESTORATION & MODIFICATION. Steve |

Hi Steve, I had a look on barney's site and I now know that residing isn't an option. Just wondered if there were "handed" wheel boxes or motors? Cheers Grant |

Grant I recall converting my LHD set up to RHD without the need to buy any spares. I simply adjusted the parking position in the motor. Steve |

I think you can just readjust the stop position. But before you try, remove the wiper arms so you don't do any possible harm. Even though it is not necessary, you will have to remove them anyway since they must be replaced with new, proper, RHD wiper arms. |

Yes, good point Chuck makes about removing them while you fiddle about. He is also correct in that you need wiper arms that crank the other way to the LHD version, so I was incorrect in my first post, saying that I did not need any conversion parts. Steve ![]() |

1.) Toss the LHD wiper arms. 2.) Install RHD wiper arms. 3.) Adjust wiper motor parking commutator (rotate 180 degrees) to park with cable withdrawn rather than extended. 4.) Don't tell anyone how easy it was. |

If you cannot get at the wiper motor or adjust its parking position (you say it is not original), you can switch the direction of the park by rotating the wheel-boxes under the scuttle so that the rack cable runs on the other side to where it is now. (so above the wheel-boxes if it is currently below them and vice versa). As the others say you need the correct wiper arms too. Let the motor park and then fit the new ones in the right position Fit the arms last to save your paint |

Most of the flat sections of the arms can be bent with padding in a decent vise. I have done it several times to get arms and blades to lay flat when down aand off. |

Guys, Thanks for your responses. I managed to modify the parking position as suggested, and I now have an MOT. Just need to get the reg number back and I might just have a road legal MGA by Christmas. Thanks for your help, Grant :-) |
