MG MGA - wire wheel differenntial needed
We have a club member who would like to convert his disc wheel car to wires. We need the complete differential. |

You can avoid all the work to convert by using I believe a TR4 wire wheel hub which will bolt on to his rear axle and he can put on wire wheels with a knock off dog eared His car will look like a real wire wheel car Jeff Becker |

Except that makes the rear track width about 2-inches too wide. |

I quess you mean rear axle not just a differential |

As AJ intimates, the diff is common. It's either the different casing for the standard MGA 1600 wire wheel set-up you need or different half shafts on the 1500 axle to accept the MGA wire wheel conversion kit that is supplied by Moss. The latter I have had on my car for the past 17 years. It works fine. As Barney says this increases the rear wheel track by about 2 inches but is quite workable. It is just a matter of whether you like the look of the slightly wider wheel in the wheel arch. Steve |

He is looking for the complete W/W rear axle. |

My car had the TR4 set up on it when I first got it. I knew so little at the time that I thought that I had a stock wire wheel car and started collecting parts for the rebuild accordingly. As far as the car handling it worked just fine and the 2 inch additional width was not noticeable since the fenders have so much space under them.I completed the switch to a proper wire wheel set up and wish that I had kept mine a disk wheel car. wire wheels look cool but are a pain to keep clean. It is not only the rear diff housing that you have to change but the axle shafts, the hubs, brake stuff, including the e brake cable. |

There is no issue with track width converting using the Triumph adaptors, although there would be on the MGB with tighter rear fender clearances. Suggest that instead of cutting off the studs you just fit a spacer plate - that way you can revert to steel wheels should you ever wish to without needing to refit longer studs. For those MGB owners inclined to try this, be advised that it requires replacement of your 1/2" studs with 7/16" wheel studs so you can use the special Triumph nuts that hold the adaptors on. The picture is of MGB front hubs with that stud conversion. Adaptors: ![]() |
