MG MGA - Wire wheel hub replacement
What is the method of removing the hub from the axle with a wire wheel hub to replace with a new one? thanks! |

Bill, if its the front one, use the knock off as a puller. Find some spacers to put between the end of the stub axle and the inside of the knock off (after removing the nut!) and tighten it. May need several different sized spacers as it comes off. |

If it is your rear wheel you will have to get it pressed off after removing the entire axel from the differential. The new hud will also have to be pressed on. Have a good day! John |

Is it possible to press it on to far? another words is there a stop to determine how far in the new one goes or must I make a mark? |

Having done this job, I can tell you that the method is to use a press to remove and install the hubs from the rear axels. On the fronts, you can use a slide hammer and a knock off that you can modify so that the slide hammer connects to the center. 1. Drill hole in knock off 2. Put a bolt through the hole. 3. connect the slide hammer to the bolt. 4. put the knock off on the front hub. 5. after several hits with the slide hammer the hub should come off. You can also use a chain around the ears of the knock off and connect the chain to the slide hammer. Either method will work, however be sure to use an old knock off as either method will damage teh knock off. If you are replacing the hub because the splines are damaged, make sure that you also check the splines in the hub of your wheels. Jim |

If you can get hold of a left and right sacrificial spinner for the front hubs: drill a large hole through the centre of the spinner and weld/braze a 5/16 nut or larger to the outside face (or inside). Thread a long bolt through the nut, attach the spinner to the hub and screw in the bolt onto the end of stub axle (after removing the axle nut) Keep screwing in the bolt and the hub will slowly come off. Don't be surprised if it leaves the inner bearing behind. If this is on really tight you may need a proper hub puller to grip behind the bearing and this one can be a little tricky. If you try to lever it off you may well damage it. |

Just to throw it out there, you can buy a factory-type puller for wire wheel hubs. There aren't cheap at around $200 USD but they sure make the job easy! |

In my experience nothing works like a commercial press does. We had to put 10 tons on one hub before it broke free - good luck doing that with a puller. |
