MG MGA - Wiring Harness Tape

Up to this point I have been using the Moss Wiring Harness Tape (162-025) to repair and replace missing cloth wiring harness covering. This is a black vinyl tape without any adhesive. Has anyone come across a better alternative? I have seen listings for wire harness cloth tapes. Does anyone have experience with these?

I use it when making supplementary wiring harnesses. It looks good and doesn't degenerate to a sticky mess like insulation tape, but doesn't unravel like the non-sticky stuff

When I was rewiring the Frog I had a few wires which were not included in the loom so when I made these up I wound them in self-amalgamating tape. It is reputed to be better than normal insulation tape (no sticky mess) and the trick is to realise it has a removable tape to pull away as you wind it round.
Can't comment on how well it will last as it hasn't been on that long. But it will look a little out of place if your loom is cotton covered.

John,
I recently used a roll of electricians shrink tape on a portion of the TF harness. You wind it around the wire bundle as usual, then heat it to shrink and tighten. Seems to work pretty well.

Don't tell anyone about my secret tape. To tape up the cloth covering where frayed.... use black hockey tape. Steal some from your kid's hockey bag....shhhhh.

I think you can still buy the fabric insulation tape! Good in dry weather, not sure what happens when it gets wet.

Hockey tape stays stuck in the wet. The insulation on the wires keeps the wires dry. The cloth dries out with no ill effects. I do believe it is the same tape that used to be sold as cloth electrical tape. Just easier to get as hockey tape.

Graeme-
When it gets wet, it then dries out. Get vinyl tape wet and it is trapped there for infinity.

We talking of the superior character of cloth friction tape. Comes of different colors sometimes and widths, but even the 1/2 inch stuff from WalMart is ok in black. This cloth is very impressionable to a handy hand with colored (white or silver on black tape) permanent markers to fake up the tracers. If you really into it you can run a roll of wax paper out on the wood floor and stick long lengths of the cotton tape (straight line here now) onto it and get a auto zone yardstick and make a fake one of those lines down the middle or off to one side with the silver market fine tip pen. Its an electric trade thing and then use that line when wrapping the tape for overlap, don't do it perfect so as to leave a trace of the trace when done, but even more, make it sloppy like a electrical union guy did it, you know. You overlap to that line see? You learns this stuff over at my website there mge and don't worry.
