MG MGA - Wiring Questions

I recently received a new custom wiring harness from Autosparks. In general, it is an excellent unit, but it arrived with a couple of sub-harnesses that did not appear to be similar to the original loom. The first was a small loom that contained four sockets for the instrument lights and some excess wiring that was not terminated in connectors. The second was the rear light sub-harness that also did not terminate in Lucar connectors. When I contacted the company, I was told that the instrument lights for an MGA were always in a separate harness and that the rear light harness was never terminated in Lucar connectors. This harness is for the Mk II style lights.

My original harness has been modified so many times over the years that I have lost track of the changes I've made and how the orignal was configured.

Can anyone answer the two questiions:

1) Were the instrument lights incorporated into the main harness (or, alternatively, on a separate harness that connected to the main harness)?

2) Was the rear light sub-harness on the Mk II terminated in Lucar connectors for the tail lights?

Thanks in advance for the expertise,
Steve

I installed a OE harness that came with my 57 1500 coupe and question 1 is YES, also with my harness also question 2 is yes but I have a 1957 1500

I just rewired my 1960 MGA 1600. There is a separate harness for the dash.

I had to use the solderless connectors for the rear light connections on my 1600. Not sure about the MKII.

Be careful when connecting the license plate light as it is easy to connect the hot to ground and the ground to the hot side. (Please don't ask.)

Good luck.

Here are two original rear harnesses. The longer top one is from a 62 1600 MK11. The smaller on is from a 60 1600. The MK11 does not use the lucar connectors.
A 1500 harness looks more like the 1600 one. It has one less wire per side.

There is a seperate harness for many of the items behind the dash. Here is a picture of the back side of a 1500 coupe dash ready to install. The dash harness is installed to the dash. Some of the main harness wires hook up after the dash is installed.

Thanks very much for the responses. R.J.'s images are especially useful and I appreciate the time that he took to take the pictures and post them.

By the way, by personal experience, I can highly recommend Autosparks to anyone interested in having a custom MGA loom made.
