MG MGB Technical - 1800cc engines

How do I identify which engine is fitted to my MGBGT. The block has been fully overhauled but there is no engine number tag on the block. Are there any casting numbers that will determine whether it is a18GA, GB,GG or an18 V. Or any other way to identify what engine is fitted in my car.
The gearbox is a 4 synchro with overdrive.

Lower, right rear side of the engine may have a casting date cast into the block. But, most parts interchange on the five main bearing engines and I have seen "mix and match" engines over the years. The only true way to determine exactly what all of the parts are is by a detail strip and inspection. But, for the most part, this is not necessary for normal maintenance and operation.

Info here http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/enginetext.htm#dating on the date code cast into many blocks that Les mentions, but it seems very hit and miss as to whether a block has one or not regardless of its age. There is some variation of external casting features over the years. Also see this chart of head casting numbers http://www.autochart.com/MGB_Head.htm, but many heads can be fitted to many ages of engine.

Thanks Paul the first site you mention is good and might help when I get in the garage and locate the casting numbers. Unfortunately the autochart site showed up as an error 404 file not found.
Thanks again

The first site is Paul's.

The link to the autochart site doesn't work as there is a comma at the end of the URL. Remove the comma and it works.

Ah yes, pasting links have a habit of appending the next character, didn't notice that, sorry.

Thanks Paul all good now

If it has a mechanical tach drive on it, it is an 18G or 18GA. If it doesn't, it isn't!
