MG MGB Technical - 1967 MGB wobble
Hi All - HAve a perlexing problem with my 1967 MGB When I accelerate there is a definite wobble with the sensation of the rear end veering out slightly, and an opposite effect when taking my foot off the accelerator. It has passed an MOT fine and looks ok underneath and nothing came up on a recent MOT even when I mentioned it to the mechanic. |

Robbie, Most likely cause is the u-bolts holding the rear axel in are loose. Don't confuse rusted in place with being tight. Charley |

Thank you very much for the advice Charley. Much appreciated! Will check this out tonight. This looks like an excellent forum and will definately be joining! |

Robbie, I have a 1965 roadster, same problem. I found the U bolts were knackered and also the bump stop pedestals so if you are going to order bits, for the few pounds, get replacement bump stops as well. Regards Chris |

Robbie. I agree with the others--U bolts are the first thing to check. While you are at it, take a good look at the hydraulic dampeners (shock absorbers) and make sure that they are in good condition, tightly mounted, and the link between the dampener and the rear axle plate is in good condition. When the rear end shifts, due to loose U bolts and/or deteriorated rubber pads, it puts a strain on the dampeners and linkage. Depending on how long the condition has been going on, you may need to replace part of the dampening system also. Clean, visually inspect for cracks and deteriorated rubber pieces, tighten everything, and see what happens on a test drive. Les |
