MG MGB Technical - 3# cylinder proplems
Does the #3 cylinder have a history problem 1970 mgb, I have antifreeze filling the cylinder non on the dip stick. Looking at replacing the head gasket |

Usually it's just simply an age thing, where the gasket has gradually rotted away, BUT there is always the chance you have a cracked cyl.head If it's simply a gasket you should be able to see the causal section when you get the head off. It will have to come off anyway, but get it checked/crack tested if the gasket looks ok and a light skim to restore the surface Cheers willy |

Pull the the head and have it Magnafluxed. This will tell you what condition the head is in. Cheers Gary 79 MGB |

If you pull the head for inspection make sure that all the stud holes along the spark plug side of the head are thoroughly cleaned. A common problem in the area of cylinders 2 and 3 is that the head gasket leaks at the stud hole and fills up the stud hole with rust which, after expanding, cracks the head in or around that location. |

Don't know what model your block is but if it is an 18GD they are prone to cracking at the top rear of No4 bore - I replace 3 when I had my business. If it filling No3 cyl then probably the gasket. Always put anti-sieze on studs & washers before tightening & run till hot & re-torque but slacken each nut in turn a 1/4 turn first. Garth |
