MG MGB Technical - 65-B Axle Shaft Leak
After all that work, what did I do wrong??? I had the proverbial rear Wheel/Axle leak, put in a new seal, speedi sleeve, checked the flat surface on the flange and trued up everything, and checked my vent which was clear. It leaks worse now than it did when I did all the work, and actually didn't appear to have much of a grove worn in it at all. Any thoughts? 65-B w/banjo diff. Steve C. |

steve sounds silly but did you put on a new gasket? ste |

Yep, and used the best gasket sealer made that I know works. Steve C. |

steve i never resleeved mine during rebuild and mine had indicated 98000 miles from a one owner so it could be the speedy sleeve causing the problem go back to standard without speedy ste |

I did the sleeve due to it leaking in the first place, but it wasn't as bad in the first place. I will get into it tomorrow and see what I can find but I don't think it's going to be visible. Everything looked just the way it should, just don't know what to look for at this point other than trying another axle extender, maybe the extender/hub are not mating properly and its leaking at the gasket. Don't forget to make sure the air vent is clear. If the vent is plugged, air pressure inside the axle can force oil through the seals. Also, note that unbalanced wheels can cause vibrations strong enough to make the seals leak. If you can feel strong, rhythmic vibrations at higher speeds, have the wheels balanced. -G. |

Hi Steve: Did you install the speedi-sleeve wet? I think Barney Gaylord on his web page uses sealant under the speedi-sleeve, such as hylomar, check out his MG Guru technical articles. Thanks: Rich Boris 67 B roadster |
