MG MGB Technical - 72B 1800 V - Side Cover Gaskets

Is there some one that sells an after marker gasket for the side covers on the 1800V engine?

I tried the cork ones (listed as for non V 1800 engines in Moss) and I've tried the rubber ones (listed for the V 1800 engine in Moss). Both are about 1/4" or more too short of a rectangle to fit inside the grove on the one side cover and the same shortage on the side cover where the gasket fits around the outside of the raised cover.

Previous person had a coke gasket on rear and pure silicone gasket material from a tube on the front plate.

Of course, engine didn't leak when engine ran, it leaked when I went to pour oil into the engine. So now i need to remove carbs and manifolds to access the side covers. Of course while we had the engine out of the car the covers didn't look that secure, but we thought, well we have the right gaskets - they just don't fit quite right. Now I know they didn't fit.

What are others using to resolve this gasket fitting problem?

Thanks for any assistance.

Try a Payen gasket kit

The rubber seal fits fine and should be used on the rear cover with the deep groove.

A thin (1/16 inch) cork gasket works best on the front cover with the flat flange.

Get a silicone set from Roadster Gaskets and kiss your leaks good-bye. I use them, so I know that they work! Give them a call: 978-658-9798

Size matters too - regardless of material, but especially if attempting to use the cork. I bought some 'no-name' side cover gaskets (as part of a gasket kit) that were too small. They would have had to be severely stretched to fit the covers - the same as reported by R. W. Maybe they would have leaked, maybe not but I didn't chance it. The Payen gaskets fit perfectly and they definitely do not leak.

Look in the archive for more suggestions. I had the same problems as you and I'm still not sure that my gasket + goo solution has worked and I'd rather not get to the situation you have. Maybe I'll try some of the above ideas.

I found the Roadster Gasket ones on ebay. I'll buy those and try again.

Thanks for recommendation.
