MG MGB Technical - AC system in a MGB

Iam restoring a 1967 clone B-GT using a 1974 body shell, and Iam looking for ideals on installing air-conditioning or a heat/cool system such as from " Vintage Air ". I should also note that shell has been converted to a 1967 steel dash, and will be running with an alternator and 1974 brake system, but not sure of what will be used for carburation.I have looked at the Moss system, but dont like that the evaporator is hanging down in the right side footwell.

Have installed an A/C system in our MGB LE, and I also live in Ontario. Email me, maybe I can help.

LJM, Have you looked at the Moss AC? Not sure if I would AC my B , but I am curious if this unit is any good. I know the Hot Rod guys swear by 'Vintage Air" units but they have lots of room to play with.

Larry, I'm planning on installing air into my MGA Coupe and have done a lot of research on this. So far a like Nostaligic Air, nostalgicairparts.com. they have the smallest condensor that I can find at 11"x19" (22" overall width) which will fit in a B easily. They also have the same condensor with the dryer attached at the front just like MOSS. I like the Sanden 507 or 508 compressor, and an underdash evaporator. This is where the "A" is easier because there is a lot of room under the dash to hang the evaporator.

My only problem I have at the moment is finding anyone who has a drawing of the brackets needed to install the compressor.

In fact when I spoke to them recently I think they said they have a kit for the "B".

Many of the cars featured on the British V8 website have air conditioning, so you can find a LOT of good ideas there about sourcing and mounting various components. Even if you have a 4-banger you may be interested to see how the V8 conversion guys have routed hoses, located the receiver/dryer, etc. You'll even find cars with the evaporator totally hidden, if that's what you like.

Start with this article for an overview:

This article shows how one of our V8 guys is doing a dashboard swap and hiding a Vintage Air evaporator behind the steel dash:

This one ought to inspire you!

After that, I would use the Google search box that you'll find at the bottom of EVERY page of the website - there are too many cars with AC installed for me to list here.

I just air-conditioned my '67 BGT last spring. I used a Sanden rotary compressor that I attached to the motor by welding four ears onto a bracket that used to hold a York compressor. I used other parts from the '77 donor MGB, including the idler pulley and thermostat housing, the one with the arm to hold the air pump. Only I used it to hold the alternator.

I used a vintage underdash Frigette evaporator and located it in the passenger footwell. Yes, it looks like it takes up too much space, but in fact there is plenty of room for the passenger's shins underneath the unit, and plenty of room behind it for the passenger's feet.

I tried several parts sources and found the best to be Old Air: http://www.oldairproducts.com . Their underdash units are essentially the same as the old Frigettes.

I can post photos if necessary. -G.

I traced my condenser/alternator brackets on paper before I installed them. If you would like a copy, send me your name and address via my e-mail address. I got the last set of brackets Classic Auto Air had and they gave me permission to duplicate them.

Having said all that, I think I could design a better set myself, but these do work.
