MG MGB Technical - aligning the steering column to rack

Hello,

Is there any specific procedure to follow when fitting the steering column back to the rack. I have refurbished the UJ, but have no idea of the original mating positions of the two columns. It does however seems resonably straight forward. Can someone confirm that it is just a case of lining up the circular recess on the shaft side with the split in the UJ (for the pinch bolt) for both shafts. There is also alignment tool you can purchase from moss. is this necessary?

Many thanks once again.
Alex Davies

If the rack, itself, wasn't removed it should simply be a bolt back together procedure. The steering column should only fit the splined shaft in one position. If the rack was removed, make sure that you re-install any shims that were removed when you took the rack off. RAY

Hi Alex, I have just done this today although my alignment was all shot because of removing the crossmember. You can get a rough eyeball alignment but I ended up making a pair of cones from some gash hardware I had around (see posting a few below this one). One tip is to torque everything up before measuring. I was about 1mm out in alignment and the steering was free turning. As you have not moved anything relative to each other you shouldn't have any problems. But my experience with my car is that it never works out that way.

Perhaps i have been a little naive. The steering rack was removed from the main cross member as part of a full suspension renovation. I assumed I could just bolt the steering rack back on and then it is just a case of setting the tracking. Is there a set procedure for doing this?
Alex Davies

Usually, the shims are riveted to the crossmember. This prevents them from being lost when the rack is removed for any reason. RAY

Post your email address and I'll send you a pdf with the instructions.
