MG MGB Technical - Alloy wheels or calling Paul Hunt

Last night I was reading the auction article in the latest edition of Safety Fast. In the pictures was a blue rubber bumper BGT. I had “hairpin” pattern alloy wheels as used on the modern MG Z cars. As they are 4 stud they must have been from a ZR or ZS. Paul, I think you have a ZS. Do you fancy an experiment!

This is of interest to me as I had not realised the bolt/stud circle diameter was the same. I did know the MGB matched the Rover 800 as I used to use an MGB wheel as spare on my 800 in place of a space saver. However, the 800 wheels will not fit the tube axle on a B because the diameter of the hub boss in the centre is a little too big.

From what I have found out so far, if the hairpins are from a ZS they will be 16” and use 205/50 tyres. I don’t know the width or offset. As a standard ride height rubber bumper B has more clearance in the wheel arch it is more tolerant of larger wheels. 205/50x16 gives a diameter that falls quite close to 165x14.

David - my tyres/wheels are 205/45 17s, but I'll have a go if you think they might fit as well.

Paul, that is close to the same overall diameter as well. Its worth a try is you don't mind. While you have a wheel off it might be interesting to measure the offset!

If I remember correctly your car is a ZS180. Perhaps the ZS120 runs 16" wheels. I know with the ZT the 260/190/160 all run 18" but the 120 runs a smaller size.

Thanks,
David

David,

I would be interested in this as I am looking at wider wheels for my A. However I don't think that the wheels from a MG ZS will fit. If you look at this site the stud PCD is 100 mm.

The MGA/MGB has a stud PCD of 4 1/2".

More likely that the wheels on the B were one of the Image wheels or something similar.

Soon see - when it stops raining ...

Should have said when the snow stops ...

My V8 hubs have opposite studs (across the centre of the hub) at about 4.45" centres and the ZS are at about 3.9" centres.

Thanks for having a look. I was sure the ones in the picture were "hairpins".

The snow was a bit of a shock when I opened the front door last night to go and pick my children up from youth club.
