MG MGB Technical - Aluminium rear engine plate - oil leak

I currently have the engine out of my MGA Coupe (1950 cc GB) to fix an oil leak! Originally I thought it was coming from the rear crankshaft seal (Moss uprated seal and speedi-sleeve) but find it is coming from the gasket between the rear bearing cap /engine block and engine rear plate. My backplate is aluminium (on the car when I purchased) and now suspect I didn't torque it up correctly when I last replaced the seal. The gasket width / clamping area at the bottom of the crank is pretty narrow - any recommendations on what gasket cement to use?
Also set screws holding the aluminium back plate to the engine used split spring washers - I am planning to delete these and replace with hardened flat washers.

Given the probable length of the seal I'd use a smear of non-setting sealant. Silicone will likely skin before you can get it all on and back together.

The rear main bearing cap has crucifix oil seals and also requires sealant on assembly, otherwise oil can weep between the cap and the block. Also the cork seal is a bit of a fiddle and is often mis-aligned. I always clamp them in place when fitting the back plate to prevent them moving.

Hi Mike
I've been using a grey coloured Wurth gasket maker/sealant lately. I don't like swapping around using different products but the rep. convinced me to give it a try and it's great- It is slow to get a skin on it giving more than enough time for assembly
I use it on g/box joints-engine assembly-diff covers etc
Even on them big front covers on Transit van engines you still have heaps of time to get it together before it skins up-
Comes in a big tube to fit a caulking gun and after use just leave a bit about 10mm hanging out of the end of the nozzle then next time you want to use it ,simply pull it out like a little rubber plug and away you go, no need to try sealing up the end of the tube
I'll get the number off the tube tomorrow--it's good
