MG MGB Technical - Anybody put in a Quantum Gearbox?
I am rebuilding a 67BGT to drive during decent weather and am considering one of the Quantum 5 speed gearbox setups instead of the original early non OD 4 speed. Any experience with the 5 speed conversion they offer. Seems complete and sturdy. Ralph |

Don't know what gearbox you refer to but I have installed a Ford T9 gearbox in my 72B years ago. I thing Quantum Mechanics from the northeast sell the same kit I used. The T9 is a breeze to install and the swap turned out great. |

I just googled this and came up with http://www.cwnicholls.com/spitfireq5speed.html Apparently Quantum Mechanics does not have a website. This kit uses an "English Ford Mercur 5-speed transmission". From that, I conclude that this is the Sierra transmission - since the Mercur was the only car marketed in the US with the Sierra box. It might even be the same kit that Moss currently sells - from Hi-Gear Engineering. The price on this site ($1850) seems a lot lower, but then this site is from 2002, so a lot could have changed since then. My 2¢... Allen |

There was a very favorable review of this outfit on page 42 of the February 2008 issue of Hemmings Sports and Exotic Cars Magazine. david "no personal experience" Lieb |

Ralph, I have the Quantum 5 speed gearbox. No problems whatsoever. Everything lines up perfectly for an easy installation. This is one complete kit to every nut and bolt. The tranny itself is a very strong unit and will last a very long time. This is one modification you will truly appreciate. John Esposito is a good man to work with. Thanks guys. My 67 Roadster is original with the early 3 syncro gearbox and I love the feel of the 1967 originality. I put a couple thousand miles only on the roadster in the summer. However My 67 BGT is being built to drive quite a bit and I have a "new" John Twist prepared early overdrive which I had planned to install. I am now leaning strongly to the Quantum gearbox for the GT and saving the early overdrive for the roadster. It has been been sitting in the crate waiting for me to make up my mind for a while. I read the Hemmings story on Quantum and they were also impressed with John. Good guy for the hobby! Cheers Ralph |

Dear Ralph, I second Ray's comments. I have one of the 5-speed conversions, and picked it up in his shop. Shareef |

I bought a recon 4 speed O/D box for my 78MGB a few years ago....great guy to deal with a real engineer. I wouldn't hesitate to deal with John...he's a nice guy. |
