MG MGB Technical - Australian 12V batteries

I want to do away with the 2x6V battery setup, as they are now so unreliable..I have had 4 batteries in the past 12 months, either made in Fiji or Indonesia.. they have all been replaced by the retailer, but I just want to go the way of the 12V system now, after having won the Aussie National MG Concour with my car ..BGT.

What choice of batteries have we got in Australia, that fit into the B cradle?

Garry,

try to find EXIDE bateries. May be you should ask in a chandlery or harbour supply.

They do exellent batteries for maritime usage and their products are exremely relyable.

Hope this helps

I have been using 1 x 12 volt battery for 30 years in my 1964 MGB. The one I use costs me about $75 with 2 year warranty and usually lasts 3 to 4 years.

The battery fits in the tray perfectly, but you need to remove the lugs on the bottom on the case with a saw before installing.

It is 10pm now so if you email me direct I will send you the battery model number from the car when I go to the garage in the morning.

I just checked the old battery which I still have, but replaced in February this year.

Exide catalogue no 37a

400CCA 70RL

Measures 197 x 165 mm at the base with the lugs removed. 180mm high.

I replaced it with a battery of the same dimensions.

Power 2000 catalogue No N36.

I bought this new battery for $77.00 from Independent Battery Distributors in Adelaide.

Hope that helps.

I've also always used a 12v battery and have never had a problem getting one that fitted easily. I converted the now spare battery box into a tool box by pop rivetting in some sides and cutting the battery cover, hinging the side that now covers the tool box/ex battery box. It all works just fine.

Does the electricity go in the opposite direction with a Aussie battery?!!

Patrick,

Yes, as with the direction of flow for the vortex of water flowing down a bathtub drain.

Thanks for all your help, but I suppose I will now have to put the battery in up-side down!
