MG MGB Technical - Axle compatibility

I've got a '69 GT with the a tube type axle fitted. In order to fit wider wheel/tire combo I took a wire wheel unit and fitted it with 4 bolt hubs.... works great my 205/60/14's fit with no rubbing, and I've been running this setup for many years now. The diff is getting noisy, clonky and tired, sounds and feels like the pinion bearing is starting to go (I drive the piss out of it so it figures), and yes I've done thrust washers, fluid change etc. I scored a free wire wheel banjo axle the other day and had two questions

1. Is the wire wheel banjo the same width as the wire wheel tube type?

2. will 4 bolt tube type hubs fit on the banjo axle?

I know I'll need a different driveshaft, and I've heard brake parts are different as well. But I like the idea of the free axle and shedding about 60 lbs of unsprung weight.

they are the same width. I do not know about the hubs.

The hubs are not interchangable between tube and banjo.
The prop shaft for 4 sync gearbox with or without overdrive is the same one as on a 3 sync non overdrive car with a banjo axle.

Er, I thought it was the 3 synchro overdrive / banjo axle MGB which had the same length propshaft as the 4 synchro/Salisbury cars.

*Effectively* the axles are much the same width as they will put the wheels as a similar position in the arches, but the quoted lengths differ e.g. 44.5" for a Banjo wire and 47" for a Salisbury wire. My Rostyle Salisbury axle casing plus bearing caps measures 48.5", so I'm assuming the half-shafts and hubs on the Banjo (as already said not interchangeable with the Salisbury) stick out more than those on the Salisbury and hence needs a narrower casing.

The 4-synch to Salisbury prop-shaft is 31.125", as is the 3-synch OD to Banjo, and the 3-synch no OD to Salisbury.

Brake drums are different, and it looks like you have to swap the handbrake levers over between sides as well, or get weird or incorrect effects on the handbrake.

Paul,

Just noticed this thread, think you may have solved a hamdbrake issue for me!
