MG MGB Technical - Balancing knock on Alloy Wheels

Hi All,

I have just had new tyres fitted to my 72 B GT which is fitted with Minator 14" knock on alloys.

Please be warned that if you let the tyre fitter balance your wheels and he puts the stick on style weights on the inner rim of the wheel it will scrap the track rod end rubbers on the first rearwards revolution of the wheel.

I had Vredestein 175x70x14 fitted and the seem well suited to the B

Ideally, they should be centre-balanced.

There is a different setting on most balancing machines for this and the weights are stuck in the middle, on the inside of the rim.

The same applies to bolt-on wheels too. I had an MOT advisory but not a fail for it. I think the pattern part track rod ends might be slightly larger.

I think you mean 'scrape', 'scrap' is a lot more serious.

Just read the original post again. On my car, the balance weights touched the end of the track rod ends not the rubber. Hence the weights are worn, not the track rod ends.

Hi, I had this, I put it down to buying the wheels on Ebay. But has the offset changed over the years, for that matter what should it be and how do you measure it accurately.
Also the centre caps I bought from Moss don't stay on, I've resorted to glueing them, anyone else had this problem.

Yep, lost one then took them all off.

I read with interest all your comments.
It definitely did scrap the RUBBERS on the first rearward revolution and yes it does scrape the track rod ends resulting in the balance weight wearing or being knocked off as was the case with my car.

My local tyre fitter reimbursed me for the track rod ends and rebalanced the wheeels putting the weights almost central on the inner rim and now missing the track rod ends comfortably.

Cheers all
