MG MGB Technical - Bell Exhaust Systems

This is more aimed that the UK folks. I have seen a lot of ads on ebay.uk etc for the Bell exhaust system.

I was wondering what sort of experiences people have had with these for ease of installation, fit etc. I am in the process of deciding which route to go. I have been planning on a new system for a while, but events last weekend have forced the issue by ripping my muffler off on the horrible roads/road works in town.

I have read quite a bit about the TT, Big Bore etc system, Moss's stainless systems etc and just a little bothered about the sound.

I am leaning more towards stock, eliminating the center muffler and running a straight pipe. My old muffler has Walker stamped on it and I cannot find a reference for it

Cheers

Is also worth checking out

The biggest improvement I made to my old BGT was a single box system (and Carb Needle's AAA ) it gave me more power and ground clearance plus a good sound.

I went single box stainless about 20 years ago. The tsil box came with an anti snag strap from the leading edge of the box to the pipe. Its got a few scuffs but has never needed a spanner on it in all that time. Falcon no longer seem to exist so cant give you a steer.

The Falcon Big Bore SS exhaust system is still available in the U.S. I've had one on my B for over 25 years and it looks like it was installed yesterday. Their is no front muffler to foul every little imperfection on the road. It uses a larger rear muffler than standard and bolts right up to the stock manifold. The sound id great, without being overly loud. I installed a TT system on a customer's car and it was way, way too loud for my tastes, even though it was made to a very high standard. For longevity and a good sound, you can't beat the Falcon system. RAY

Gerry-
I have to agree with K Harris that you owe it to yourself to check out Maniflow's system. Great performance, good sound, but not so loud enough as to irk the neighbors. Failing that, the Peco grey system is also worthwhile.

JUst an aside, I removed the centre box, with the standard exhaust manifold, prior to fitting a tubular performance system. It was very loud and rather raspy with just the rear box. It is now better with the tubular system, and a new rear box which is larger than before. Performance is good, and noise up a little, louder at high revs. I suppose the old story is set it all up on a rolling road, and experiment, if one had the time and money. Mike

i bought a bell stainless system over 3 years ago, still going strong and no corrosion other than surface scuffs from the road. It was very easy to fit, the manifold (like many aftermarker ones) is slightly thinner than the inlet manifold so you need a spacer when you bolt it to the head. i used a thick washer cut in half. easy peasy. the sound is fantastic, not too loud but a gorgeous burble. check out my vids on youtube

I have a straight through Bell system on my '77 B and its a lot better quality than the old Peco system.

No rust or corrosion to speak of and it sounds the business (especially on the over run).

I have just looked at your Vid AP New. Looks great. That brake system must have cost you a bundle! Willowood, and vented discs? And what seats did you get to fit? I am interested. regards Mike

Yeah the brakes we're quite expensive but with a lack of straight line speed, my goal on the track is outbraking the others. The seats are made by cobra, i think there the 'clubman' ones. pretty much the largest buckets you can fit. i want some smaller ones now though.
