MG MGB Technical - BGT door hinge bolts.

Mercifully, I checked the main hinge-to-body attachments today, only to find all 4 nuts slightly loose (see photo). Question: I can't remember whether there is any adjustment of the door position afforded by loosening these nuts, before the copious adjustments outlined in detail in Paul Hunt's website.
I'm keen to do the nuts up once and for all before I put the splashguards back - so I'll hold off until anyone can put me right. Thanks as ever ... John.

Answer yes, there is adjustment, up to a point. the No 4 posi screws can be slackened and the whole hinge slides in or out. If that's not enough (sometimes isn't) the hinge "strap" within the door can be shimmed as well.

G'Day John,

As Allen suggests, a minimum may be achieved by shimming at that point on the hinges. Too long ago for me to remember what adjustments I made on our B/GT. But, I do recall on those four behind the splash plate I did put a drop of the "blue" thread lock before closing up the panels. A few helpful torque setting on this link if you need them.

Lazza

PS; Quite a storm down South mate. Hopefully none of that will reach Queensland.

So if I slightly loosen the 2 large nuts on the underside of the wing panel (in my photo), will it offer me some movement of the hinge-to-door-jamb mating surfaces before I loosen the 4 pozi-drives in the door jamb? - I guess I should try that first, to minimize movement of the whole door; then fine-tune by loosening hinge screws in the door jamb and, if necessary, the hinge screws in the door itself.
I only need to make a significant inwards-adjustment of the nearside door to bring it in towards the car body.
Thanks Allan and Larry for your input - I'll report on progress at the weekend. Regards, John.

JP, the hinges won't move unless you slacken the Pozi screws as well as the under wing bolts. These big studs are wielded to the hinge bracket. The pozi i screws thread into a "captive" , but lose plate which does allow for in and out movement.
Allan Reeling

Laz - yes, terrible stuff down south, but up here in North Queensland, it's beautiful one day, perfect the next.
Allan - if the hinge assembly won't move until I loosen the large nuts AND the 4 pozi-drives, then that's clarified it, thank you.
PS - still no luck tracking down a cant rail cover to borrow and have copied. These things must be rare as hens' teeth. Regards, John.

BTW, I'm having my V8 'done' at the moment and currently have all the external and most of the internal trim stripped out. It was only after removing the rear padded section of the roof trim that I could see the covers are indeed moulded, as it wasn't stuck down at that end. As I mentioned further forward where it is stuck down it looks just like sheet vinyl.

FWIW the main panel is little more than compressed pink fluff with vinyl stuck to it, maybe with a sheet of thin card between the two, visible after removing the glass sunroof. The workshop said not to remove it or the cant rail covers, as the main panel will break apart, and the covers fracture unless heated very carefully.

Hi Paul,

Can you post a picture to help detail this when you have a chance?

Hi Larry - headlining or cant rail covers? Ot both?

I'm 'visiting' again on Tuesday so can take more pictures, but in the meantime one of the headlining is attached.

Paul,
See archived thread "WTB - Cant rail covers, BGT."
I posted some photos of the cant rail covers. I removed them with the help of a hair dryer and peeling them off very carefully and slowly. Managed to do them all without any damage, took about an hour.
Brian Shaw

Hi Paul,

Thanks for that, I've read about it but hadn't seen it. I'll also have to have a look at Brian's thread for more detail.

Regards,

Larry C.

PS; John, keep us posted on your progress.
