MG MGB Technical - Blowing exhaust
I have a stainless steel exhaust on my 1975 mgngt which has a small blow at the join just aft of the gearbox. I guess I need to separate the exhaust to fix this; anyone got advice on the best way to separate the pipe? |

Heat. If you have access to an oxy/acetaline torch, the pipes will come apart in just a few minutes. RAY |

A stainless system shouldn't rust together and need heat to part it. Is there a clamp there? If so have you tried undoing it and wiggling the pipes apart? However if it is a clamped joint and it has been overtightened it can distort the halves and lock them together. |

Penetrating oil on the joint and a chain wrench to twist the pipe. |

to be honest, you may be just as well to create a bandage out of exhaust sealer and aluminium foil (or a tin can & clamps). depends on how exacting you wish to be - the result will be the same although pulling it all apart may look a bit tidier - should this be a massive concern taking into account where it is. "create a bandage"- would this pass the MOT? |

It should do if it doesn't leak. The test is to determine condition on the day, not how long a repair will last. |

At my last MoT the tester amused himself reading off the script on my two cut up tin can exhaust repairs (one ASDA black olives, the other an old Castrol brake fluid tin). No leaks, so no prob at all on issue of cert. On this subject, somebody put me on to an exhaust pipe expander. These things aren't hugely expensive, but are useful making existing exhaust pipes round again if you've mangled them a little trying to get sections apart. |
