MG MGB Technical - Blue or Black OD gearbox
I'm debating whether to install a blue or black OD gearbox in my 72B ? your opinions please. Thanks, Barry |

Chrome bumper cars i.e. 72 have black label ODs, rubber bumper blue label. The main knock-on difference is that Mk2 black label ODs require a 1280tpm speedo (which presumably you have), blue label a 1000tpm (which presumably you would have to obtain). |

Paul- Thank you |

I may be wrong but I think the earlier Black label boxes are top fill with the dipstick and the blue ones are side fill,no dipstick, easier in my opiniion. Mike |

On a short side note: any idea how much a blue label and a 1280 speedometer will throw off the readings? I'm not quite on the road yet and for sure will GPS it, but just curious what I'll find. |

The *gearboxes* were top-fill for chrome bumper and side-fill for rubber (and having both the side-fill is definitely *not* easier in my opinion, either to check or to top-up), but the labels are on the OD so you could get a mix and match. 1000tpm drive vs 1280tpm speedo, i.e. 22% lower i.e. quite a bit and definitely ticket territory. |
