MG MGB Technical - Bolt & screw thread sizes
Does there exist a list of the sizes of nuts and bolts used on the mgb. It would be useful in order to buy stainless steel bolts etc. I know most are unc or unf but all parts catalogs just quote bolt or nut, not the sizes. I need a few ordinary nuts and not living in the UK the postage from our friends Hive Moss etc comes to much more than the nuts and bolts. |

Tim I purchased all the stainless steel nuts, bolts etc. for my MG TF and MGC from Surplus Supplies of Newark, Nottinghamshire, UK. The business is owned by Mike Peters and I found his prices most competitive. His friendly helpfulness and service is second to none. You can buy in quantities you want and not pre-packed volumes. I understand that he does exhibit in Europe at the major Classic Car events which would help with carriage costs - if you were going to the event, obviously! His details are: Surplus Supplies Rosegarth Mill Lane Caunton Newark Notts. NG23 6AJ United Kingdon email: surplusmpeters@aol.com Tel/Fax: 00 44 (0)1636 636735 Hope this helps you. Robert |

Not AFAIK. I got all mine, in stainless wherever pssible, from a local outfit, Dependex. The storeman used to cringe when he saw me approach the trade counter as the car went back together. |

Tim. While not a complete list, some of them are listed on my website along with information to determine the size of unknown bolts and studs. Go to www.custompistols.com/ and look at the MG section. Les |

Tim, most threads are UNF only very few are UNC. Fasteners for the hinges of the doors, i think on the B. Be careful with stainless steel bolts and nuts on a car! You must not use these alloys at the breakes(!!) or the engine(!!), as they will not reach the necessary strengh for setting the torque demands given in the workshop manual without stretching and tend to expand unter the influence of increasing heat. An other problem can occure with corrosion as they tend to offer nickel when there is a chance of electrolytical corrosion. You will not be able to see any weakness as they tend to corrode inside. I had been with the stainless fasteners industry for some years and there are no advantages of AISI 304 or AISI 316 or V2A/V4A fasteners to be used on cars compared to galvanized steel ones which are more relyable throughout. There is no reason to recommand SS fasteners for cars anyway. I would only tend to use this material for fixing carpets and for cockpit finish or for the bumpers and at some exhaust hangers that are not directly exposed to engine heat. Ralph |

Ralph. Good points. Another good point is that "stainless steel", "Rostfrei Stahl, will rust when in contact with carbon steel which is rusting. It will also rust if it is a high humidity area and has any salt (NaCl) on it. The use of stainless steel does not mean that regular cleaning and maintenance can be done away with. It simply means that, under some circumstances, the stainless steel resists rust better than plain carbon steel. Hardened carbon steel can, under some circumstances, hold up as well as mild stainless steel as hardened steel does not rust as easily as mild carbon steels. Les |

Thanks to all of you, very helpful. This is a good forum. Didn't realize stainless can corrode so will probable go for zinc plated. |
