MG MGB Technical - Burlen New Fuel System?

Any word on if this new system will be scaled down for MG?

Sounds like they are going to address other cars than just the Jag. Perhaps a email to them from as many of us as can would push this a bit faster. Got to believe that MG has got to be one of the largest SU users out there.

Words like "complex" and "new ECU" don't make my heart feel glad. I like MGBs etc because I can fix them myself. When I'm a bit older and don't want to fix them anymore I'll buy something new that's complex straight out of the crate. The beauty of the SU is that it was a kind of pre-cursor to fuel injection and wonderfully simple.

It was said, admittedly some time ago that modern ECU controlled fuel injection had fewer stations (or the equivalent) to the 16 of a carb needle. I rather feel this is a solution to a problem I didn't know I had.
Having said that it might be more relevant to highly modified engines?

Michael,

Remember that the stations on an SU needle are just defined points on the needle where to measure the diameter. As the needle is tapered the overall effect is continuously variable, no discrete steps.

An ECU, being digital, must, by definition, have discrete steps and "stations" would be a null concept, there being a look up table or algorithm that determines how much fuel to inject. To be functionally able to provide smooth power there must be a lot of discrete steps. How many, I don't know.

Herb, on the Rover V8 hot wire fuel injection there appear to be 128 steps to the fuel map. Well, that's what I guess from looking at this map off Rovergauge software while attached to an MG RV8.

Mike Howlett

Hi Mike,

I agree that there are 128 divisions in that map, but at the top it says it's map 5, so at least 5 maps, giving 640 steps, maybe more.

I really don't know what that map is telling us, dumb me.

I think this is a solution to a problem that most people don’t have. Having said that MG owners have never shied away from technical innovation I wouldn't mind trying these, not because I have a problem with my current SU's but it sounds interesting.

I can see these may be of use in countries where emissions are a problem and traditional carbs struggle to meet regulations but I believe if that’s the aim they’ll need quite a few addition sensors, MAF, MAP, O2, coolant temp and air temp to name but a few.

It’s my understanding, for production cars at least, the lookup table is more for acceleration and max power and that under steady state driving the system goes into closed loop. This measures the fuel air ratio using the O2 sensor to adjust the fuelling on the fly. Also I believe it’s not just a simple table but a 3D map, this allows the fuelling to set using multiple parameters including RPM, load, throttle opening ect.

I doubt I’ll be rushing out to buy these as I'm sure they’ll be out of my price range (cheap to none) but if it helps keeps a British company going then good luck to them.

"Progress" is not assumed to mean "something better."
Amish central tenet.

In theory an electronic system should be capable of matching fuelling to conditions significantly better than what is a very simple mechanical carb. It's difficult to believe that ECUs on modern cars aren't doing a far better job than our carbs, but modern OEM use will have millions of pounds and dollars spent on getting it right given the volume of units being produced. I can't see anywhere near that much research being done on this Burlen kit.

I think that is Buren joust keeping with competitors. You can buy EFI Weber “carbs” and now we will get also SUi http://www.jenvey.co.uk/products2/twin-throttle-bodies/dcoe-heritage-bodies/heritage-dcoe-twin-body-40-48mm-tdsxx . I welcome that. When I change from carbs to EFI on my B was my biggest issue that it does not look stock – I just like design of SU carbs.
