MG MGB Technical - Can this piston be saved?
As you can see, there are deposits on this piston. It's not pitted or scored. Can I buff these deposits off, or do I need to replace? Thanks.

No. It's toast. the hydraulic seal is to the piston surface. New pistons are quite cheap. |

Hi Dan, You should contact British Sports Car Restorations. They are a Moss distributor and give up to 16% off the Moss price. Their web site is www.bscr.com Ken |

I would consider buffing it and look for pits. If it is pitted then a replacement is due. |

Hi, I'm usually of the opinion to try and fix something BUT, since this is a critical stopping part any issue whatever, and you're parked in someone else's boot. Buy a new one. Herb |

These caliper pistons seem to be common place, so, yes buy a new one. But if one had to repair, is it possible to remove the chrome and re-chrome?? I know that one has to copper plate first this would take up any pitting etc? Mike |

In theory, you could re-plate the piston and the copper plating stage would, indeed, fill any voids, but the cost would be prohibitive. The best solution is to go with stainless steel pistons and never have to worry about pitting again. RAY |
