MG MGB Technical - Car stops when hot
Can anyone help. I have a 72 MGB with electronic ignition. After a few miles when the car is running at the right temp the car backfires very badly and the whole timing seems to fail with the car coming to a halt. Once the car has cooled down it starts again and seems to run fine utill it get warm again. Any ideas

Probably the coil - check with the makers of your electronic ignition as to the correct coil for their system and fit a new one!

As Chris says it is more than likely to be the coil on points systems, but with electronic ignition it is just as likely to be the electronic ignition module itself. As I'm loath to spend money when it isn't needed I'd put it back to points and bypass the electronic ignition for diagnostic purposes.

Hi Nick My GT has started doing the same thing... did you get problem solved... I tried a new coil... same problem! Any other ideas please folks.

I had this problem with two vehicles, a 77 B and a 77 I-H Scout, both of which had electronic ignitions. Replacing the electronic ignitions corrected the problem and both cars have run well for many years now. Replaced the electronic ignition on the B with a points type system. Much easier to troubleshoot without owning an electronics lab. Les

Fitted a new coil and HT leads today. Everything seems fine again, thanks for all your advice |
